Actually not. The burka was invented by the Saudis in the 1970s to replace the traditional headscarves that showed the face.

Mattel is making a statement that little girls are of no value.
Any clothing that comes with Barbie is only temporary when my daughter is involved. She makes new clothes using tape and fabric scraps or paper towels. At the end of the day though, most Barbies go to the toy box naked.
My concern is for the poor little girls who may inadvertently leave Barbie in a state of undress where male family members might see too much plastic. Perhaps Mattel should firmly glue the burka in place to reduce the potential for Barbie related honor killings.
