WASHINGTON The White House says President Barack Obama is placing heavy emphasis on how the United States eventually will withdraw from Afghanistan even as he plans to announce a troop increase next week.
White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said Wednesday that the United States is in its ninth year of military involvement in Afghanistan and "we are not going to be there another eight or nine years."
Gibbs says Obama's recent meetings with military advisers have often focused on how to train Afghanistan's police and army so they can secure and hold areas taken from the Taliban after U.S. forces are gone.
Obama will address the nation Tuesday night on his Afghan strategy from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He will brief key members of Congress earlier that day.

We need an exit stratigy from the US government.
Here’s my exit plan: kill all the bad guys, declare victory, bring them home. Any “plan” without victory is no plan at all.
If the “exit plan” comes as quickly as the “try to win the war plan” we’ll be there for more than 8 or 9 years.
Obama is expecting to withdraw in another....yes another....8-9 years. More kids will die....count on it.
That, and it’ll give him a chance to yammer on and sound smart to his base.
Exit, not succeed.
Well duh. There’s ALWAYS an exit strategy in a war.
Obama’s needed 101 days to come to this conclusion?!
Has 0bama ever spoken of the word “victory”.
How must our military feel, knowing that the primary objective of our Manchild and Chief is to ‘leave’.
It literally terrifies me to even imagine what our world would have been like had the morons we have in office today been in control during WWII.
He and Rahm must have gotten yelled at by all of the celebrities, communist Bloomberg and MSM Katie Couric’s at the State Dinner last night.
He announces that he will announce a decision, then various numbers of troops leaks... so then they announce they will announce a certain amount of troops sent and now this.
They are pathetic beyond words. Way to cheer the troops up.
Exactly. But he plays politics with our national security and no one says a freaking word.
We are not there to 'nation build' only destroy the Taliban.
We need to pull-out and when the Taliban show up, go back in and hit them again.
Of course, the libs will say, now you're being simplistic. Maybe so, but sometimes simplest is best. You don't go into a war without the intention of winning. Victory is always the best exit strategy.
“”Obama will address the nation Tuesday night on his Afghan strategy from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He will brief key members of Congress earlier that day.””
Shameful that he would use our military or military institutions this way. I wish the cadets could take him into custody and dump him in the Hudson River. I just don’t know what to call that man anymore but I really feel for our troops.
THis contradicts the report yesterday that the plan didn’t include exit strategy discussion.
Intellectuals abhor simple truth. Patton said it well: Americans will not tolerate defeat. Shoot, even Obama was into the "victory thing" after the election. Remember "I won"?
I know it is confusing.
Obama plays games unless it is protecting a terrorist.
VICTORY is the only exit plan in war.
He said he’s not comfortable with the term “victory” when it comes to armed conflict.
Yep now this is the latest spin of PURE partisan politics
Gibbs press briefings
Can you imagine President Roosevelt asking Secretary of War Stimson for his exit plan on December 8, 1941?
Let all the bad guys know how and when you plan to leave. Also, let them know exactly what the game plan is so that they can thwart any plans you have in perpetuity.
Great job liberals! Keep up the great work and while you are at it, destroy what's left of troop morale while to destroy the country.
I've been here before during the Vietnam war, and saw what politicizing a war does to everyone who is trying to win it.
The damage done is forever, and it never gets better.
I am still waiting for the day that I can once and for all redeem myself from the destruction of my own sense of pride in my once loved uniform. Reagan brought us back from the brink, but it's been a slow and steady return to the pits of despair ever since the Dems took Congress in 2006 and even before that with tailhook and the constant attacks on the military from congress.
One day I hope to be one of many who once again defend this country against all enemies both foreign and domestic. I would like to go out with some sense of nobility and valor as opposed to remembering what it is like not to have it at all.
One day soon perhaps, I will get that chance if I am lucky. Nothing would please me more.
Well said. Thank-you.
I’m sure there’s a parody in here, somewhere, of “50 Ways To Leave Your Lover”
You just slip out the back, Barack.....
I wonder when he IS "comfortable with the term Victory".
You know the answer to that - he said “we won” when people objected to his agenda.
He’s perfectly comfortable with defeating the left’s political enemies, ie, patriotic, traditional Americans.
