Democratic Sen. Richard Durbin recently was asked if a national health care bill would pass the Senate by the end of the year. "It must," Durbin responded. "We have to finish it."
Many other top Democrats share Durbin's determination to meet this deadline. But it's almost certainly not going to happen, for three reasons: the calendar, the Senate's other business, and, most importantly, growing public opposition to the health bill itself.
Start with the calendar. No matter what Durbin says, there's not enough time to get a bill of the scope and complexity of the 2,074-page Senate proposal -- which was only unveiled 10 days ago -- done by New Year's.
The Senate's first full day of business after the Thanksgiving break is Tuesday, Dec. 1. After that shortened week, there are two more workweeks, beginning Dec. 7 and 14, before the beginning of the traditional Christmas-New Year's break. That's a total of 14 working days (assuming the lawmakers work through the weekends) to debate, amend, and vote on the bill.
But even if the Senate were to work through part of the holidays and add a few days to the legislative calendar, there won't be enough time to deal with the amendments senators will propose. It won't just be Republicans trying to slow things down; there will be Democrats making changes, too. Say Senator X believes some provision in the bill will have a negative effect on his state. He'll need to be able to tell voters that he looked out for them. "They're all going to need their CYA amendments," says one well-connected Republican Senate aide. For anyone unfamiliar with iron acronyms of Capitol Hill, CYA means Cover Your Ass.

He picked Dec 31st in the pool.
When asked about the republic, Durbin responded. “We have to finish it.”
Is the reason they are in such a hurry because they want to start taxing us in January 2010? I’m really not sure when these taxes start kicking in.

He sounds like a mad rapist—then again, that’s what democrats do to taxpayers.
The image of 58 Democrap senators flying headlong into ship anti-aircraft fire and mostly crashing into the ocean and never having to deal with them again appeals to me.
He looks and acts like the main protagonist in a 50's ~ 60's Saturday afternoon matinée or drive in movie....
(This is scary kids)
They will finish it because they know something we don’t. They will win the 2012 elections after the census shifts population to blue states and control of the house, presidency and electoral college to the left in perpetuity.
A general question to our “elected” representatives: When the people who elected you to represent them hear you are going to vote for something completely at opposite to their desires, what do you expect them to do? I know, they can vote you out, but alas, the damage has been done by your malfeasance.
So, my second question, why do you think they may not come and remove you by your ear as you would remove an unruly child from a classroom? Maybe if you dwell upon this question a bit, you may decide to do the right thing. If not, consider the first letter of the word hear is H and you may have all H to pay for your failure to use the last three letters, EAR, so use it.

No, they are in such a hurry because they need to bring the US to its knees in 2010, so that BHO can declare marshal law and suspend elections.
They... don’t... care... about... being... voted... out.
Look back on the summer recess and the negative comments that the ‘reps’ were given about the hc bill by their constituents, it was even reported by the media as negative.
Regardless, they just recently passed it for consideration and debate.
