What would happen in a murder trial if the prosecution said we have the defendants fingerprints on the murder weapon but we threw the weapon away. The judge would immediately rule the accused innocent and the prosecutor would wind up in jail for willfully destroying evidence.

What these people did is no different.
They are liars and have committed criminal fraud and criminal conspiracy.

“The CRU is basically saying, ‘Trust us’. So much for settling questions and resolving debates with science,” he said.

Unricken believable.
Can you imagine what would have happened if 'This Guy' said that.

Trust me, E=mc2

Just a hunch, but I think he would have stayed a Patent Clerk for quite some time.

Right out of the San Diego ACORN playbook.... Ask Holder and Jerry Brown how to handle this!

I remember seeing something a long time ago about the temperature meter’s placement being a variable that was skewing data—oftentimes it was placed near a shed in an otherwise barren location so that wind and freezing rain might be blocked by the shed’s position and that even being hidden from direct sunlight would alter the meter reading. Believe it or not I think it was on a Channel 13 (read PBS) show since it was too long ago for me to have had cable.

Two thousand scientists, in a hundred countries, engaged in the most elaborate, well organized scientific collaboration in the history of humankind, have produced long-since a consensus that we will face a string of terrible catastrophes unless we act to prepare ourselves and deal with the underlying causes of global warming.

AL GORE, speech at National Sierra Club Convention, Sept. 9, 2005

All across the world, in every kind of environment and region known to man, increasingly dangerous weather patterns and devastating storms are abruptly putting an end to the long-running debate over whether or not climate change is real. Not only is it real, it's here, and its effects are giving rise to a frighteningly new global phenomenon: the man-made natural disaster.

BARACK OBAMA, speech, Apr. 3, 2006

The revised figures were kept, but the originals — stored on paper and magnetic tape — were dumped to save space when the CRU moved to a new building.

In short, these folks are not scientists. They are ideologues and politicians.

Considering large concerns usually back up there servers on a regular basis, it's simply not credible that the data was “thrown away”. (Heck I've got work files going back 8 or 10 years.) Purposely destroyed would be a much better description.

These guts need to be in prison.

Suggest you incarcerate the entire bodies, not just the innards.

Reminds me of a Miami Vice episode where a chopper carrying tons of cocaine stops midair with the miami police choppers on either side of him ordering him to land. Then the bad guys proceed to dump all the cocaine in the middle of the ocean. Hilarious to see it. Not so hilarious for the good guys.

.................. You trying to tell me that it was never converted to digital? That would be beyond comprehension for it would be needed for calculations..............

Most excellent point!
It seems to me that the formulas to “smooth” the original data must be available as part of their models: thus, by running the formulas in reverse might get us back to the “raw data” — unless everything was total bu11sh#t.

And amazingly, but not surprisingly, my local lib rag refuses to print any mention of this scandal. We’re still getting socked with the usual warmist propaganda. Only letters to the editor from conservatives mentions the scandal.

It's the same story in Rochester, NY, where our local rag, the Democrat and Chronicle, hasn't posted a darn thing about the Climategate scandal because it doesn't fit into their lefty world-view. They never reported on the 9/12 March on Washington DC and we had 4 full bus loads of people as well as several car loads, that participated. We protested them right across from the Gannett Building for "Operation Can You Hear Us Now?" and there was nary a mention in the D&C.

This is huge and I have a feeling that Climategate is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg unraveling the propaganda war that's been instituted by the left for the last 40 years! We need to ramp up the pressure on our elected officials to reject "Cap and Tax" and Obamacare, both of which are socialist scams.

In the world of real science, if the data doesn’t exist the conclusions are invalid.

I am going to quibble, because this is a point that nonscientists seem unable to get entirely right. Quite simply, in the absence of data to either establish it or refute ita hypothesis may or may not be valid. No evidence is no evidence.

Now, when you make claims, and it comes out that you forged the data and then destroyed the records, that is called research "misconduct" which includes research fraud. The relevant institutions and funding agencies are supposed to investigate and impose sanctions, if warranted, which can include return of unspent money, withdrawal of principal investigator privileges and firing (by the institution), termination of existing research grants (by the funding agency), ineligibility for further funds (from that agency and any other agency that works from the same banned list).

These are administrative actions, only. Whether or not civil or criminal claims could be filed in a court of law is another issue.

What’s the problem with making a request for data and having it supplied? Why the need to take it to the FOIA level unless there was a policy of STONEWALLING? FOIA was put in place to FORCE government agencies to divulge information when they would otherwise refuse because the refused data was either incriminating or embarrassing. The fact that FOIA was considered necessary is in itself evidence of malfeasance. Their lame ass excuse of destroying data because of a move or space requirements needs to be compared to the normal practices in such a situation of any other govt. agency or business.

Huge news and disturbing...where are the arrests and trials?

Where's the news?? I just went to the websites of the regional papers here, typed "climategate" into the search box, and all returned "0 results."

“Something is clearly not right here...”

I was thinking the same thing. Why would the emails have them talking about ‘withholding’ data if they already knew it was gone & only the fudged data was available?

Very well said!! The frustrating thing about this whole mash up orchestrated by environmentalist true believers is that good and reproducible science needs to be done in this area.

What is the effect of the man made contributions of CO2 to the atmosphere?? The overall % of CO2 remains tiny but is there a "tripping point"?? We really have no idea.

We know the earth has endured both hotter and much colder time periods. The ocean levels have been both higher and much lower.

Some 75,000 years ago, The eruption of Toba in Indonesia ushered in a 1,800 year Ice age and almost wiped humans out. This can and will happen again and an ice age would be devastating to civilization. In fact, we may be going into an ice age without a volcanic introduction.

So many questions and we can not trust the people best situated to answer them.

Yeah! then due to a lack of upkeep, after many years the box the instruments were housed in started to fall apart, so sunlight hit the instruments; then after another 25 years the barren location became a shopping mall, with asphalt parking lot next to the instruments!
