9K Marines Reportedly to be First to Go After Obama Announces Troop Increase for Afghanistan

President Obama is expected to announce Tuesday an additional 30,000-35,000 U.S. troops to Afghanistan, which reportedly may start with 9,000 Marines being deployed to southern Afghanistan followed by 1,000 Army trainers in February.

The Washington Post reported Sunday that final preparations for the 9,000 Marines will commence as part of a deployment aimed at Helmand province, where the Taliban stronghold has been partly gutted by an additional 10,000 Marines sent earlier this year.

"The first troops out of the door are going to be Marines," Gen. James T. Conway, the Corps' top officer, told Marines in Afghanistan on Saturday, according to the newspaper. "We've been leaning forward in anticipation of a decision. And we've got some pretty stiff fighting coming."

Obama is expected to announce on Tuesday his new strategy for the eight-year-old conflict in Afghanistan. Speaking at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., the president is expected to call for 30,000 to 35,000 new troops to be deployed over the next 12 to 18 months.

All the approved leaks are coming out of the White House now in anticipation of the 0 speech at West Point. It's interesting how all the stories focus on the troop increase, yet we all know that his speech will not just be to announce a troop increase. He'll have to throw some meat to his far-left base, and that means announcing some sort of "exit strategy" guaranteed to insure confusion and cross-purposes, if not outright defeat. Curious how that aspect of the speech is not part of these approved leaks, making me think that what he's going to announce is going to be some sort of indensible and humiliating surrender.

I would hope there would be a ‘exit strategy’ at some point. We currently have 68K troops in Afghanistan, and that does not includes PMC’s.

Now we are gonna add 30-35K more, bringing over 100k troops in Afghanistan. Joy.

I hope thats ‘enough’ to fininsh the ‘job’; which of course, won’t happen.

The marines are supposed to be a sea-based force for quick insertion and capture of enemy land.

They are not meant to be a permanent land army fighting inland (as in Korea and Vietnam).

That’s the army’s job.

But—the problem is our army has shrunk so much that it can’t do its task and be everywhere (Bosnia, Iraq, Korea, etc.) all at the same time.
