RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Students aren't the only ones benefiting from the billions of new dollars Washington is spending on college aid for the poor.

An Associated Press analysis shows surging proportions of both low-income students and the recently boosted government money that follows them are ending up at for-profit schools, from local career colleges to giant publicly traded chains such as the University of Phoenix, Kaplan and Devry.

Colleges cost more and more, and the kids coming out of them can’t even read and write.

The only thing the University system is designed to do is to provide healthy 6-figure salaries and lifetime jobs to liberals who would starve to death if they had to live on their own wits.

The price of college in traditional public and non-profit private schools has gone through the roof. When I was a young man, the tuition at Pitt was $1000/year- now its $13000.

Its not suprising at all that entrepenuers have realized that they can make a profit at the current market prices and have entered the field big-time.

My son works for the University of Phoenix, and it is true that a lot of the college aid is approved for these schools is being wasted, but it is not going to the colleges. The fault lies in the application process which admits anyone with a high school diploma.

Con artists figured out how to exploit the system right away, especially benefits for handicapped and minorities. My son had a call from someone who was very open about the scam and asked my son to co-operate with his fraud. The guy wanted to register 32 handicapped applicants at one time and apply for government aid. One semester of government aid is paid to the school and the rest goes to the students. The filer paid each of the students a small sum and kept the rest of the money for himself. No work was ever completed and if the school turned down the students a complaint would be filed against the school and the counselor for discrimination.

My son just told the guy to call another registration counselor, he wasn’t interested. Evidently the filer had been working this scam for quite awhile because he knew the process and internal documenting system better than my son.

Why didn’t your son call the FBI? Turning one’s head to crime is as bad as participating.

The only problem with on-line schools is that they require the students to actually work. Classes from the University of Phoenix require a twenty page paper every week. There are no objective tests, no true or false, fill in the blank or multiple choice, and plagarism can be electronically detected.

The scam is on the part of the students who apply for full aid and pocket everything beyond the first term’s tuition.

I told you, the filer threatens to file a discrimination complaint against both the counselor and the school. Most, if not all, the con artists have been a member of a particular minority.

Simply writing papers does not necessarily measure learning. Objective tests do as well. And, who really knows for sure who is the actual author of these papers?

Objective tests, given on line are worthless. Objective testing, in my opinion is worthless, but worse than worthless if you cannot monitor the testing. Like I said plagiarism can be electronically checked. Of course, the students could pay someone else to write the papers, but there are so many of them, that it would be very difficult and expensive.

Don’t think for a moment that they’re not connected to the Dems in Congress. It’s ALWAYS this way.

My son also works for UOP as does his girlfriend....and my husband got his Masters there too. They definitely fill a niche, such as working adults getting additional education or a young person who doesn't like the traditional learning environment getting a technical certificate.

It certainly doesn't have quite the traditional "college experience" of ASU. For instance, their football team sucks (maybe because they don't have one)!

Of course, this year at least, so does ASU's... :(

....and how would that be effected by your son calling the FBI? They certainly wouldn't disclose your son's identity.

First of all, the filer gives no reportable information until the enrollment counselor agrees to the arrangement.

Has it occurred to you that once the FBI steps in they take care of little details like finding out identities etc. But like all women, now go ahead and get the last word!

What’s wrong with For-profit schools?

The schools don't make a profit. They are supported with billions of taxpayers dollars and tax credits for tution payers.

It's the Democrat's idea of a "profit."
