U.S. residents are split over whether the country can achieve its goals in Afghanistan, according to a Gallup poll released this weekend.

Almost three-quarters of those surveyed, 73%, say they fear spending in Afghanistan will interfere with domestic goals.

Just over half, 51% , stated their support for the president's strategy, while 48% said they oppose it.

This is just the way people are in the modern era - it doesn't speak for Obama, really. People can be convinced that military action is good but their threshold for pain is low, and their expectations tend to be unrealistic.

They think a war should be quick and neat, where no innocents get hurt. It's a very immature view.

When they don't get the results, many get antsy. Over time, they end up aligning with the people who were against the military intervention in the first place.

Increasingly, it appears the USA just doesn't have what it takes to fight a war.

The picture caption says it all.
“The people” could use some leadership and unfortunately, during these dark days, there is precious little of it on this or most other issues.

The hell of it is, all the polls I’ve seen ask the wrong questions. Supporting Obama isn’t the point, doing the right thing to protect American citizens is the core issue. Obviously Obama’s plan is not the right way to do that, but when they poll people this way, some will say Yes, I support it because they believe we need to increase troops to fight terrorism, others will say No, because they believe Obama’s “pre-surrender” plan is weak and will cost American lives.

The pollsters are clueless, corrupt, or both.

If they really want to rally support, they should should show 9-11 footage of people jumping from the burning twin towers to their deaths. Couple all the PC ‘we don’t want to offend anyone’ crap with the gnat-like attention span possessed by 90% of entertainment-addicted Americans, and this is what you get; an ‘aren’t we there yet’ complacent/apathetic mentality. Of course, it’s hard for an administration to sell something that it doesn’t really believe in itself.
