'Climategate' professor Phil Jones awarded £13 million in research grants
Telegraph (U.K.) ^ | December 5, 2009 | Robert Mendick

Posted on 12/05/2009 2:04:11 PM PST by Schnucki

The figure is disclosed in a leaked, internal document posted on the internet by climate change sceptics who have seized upon it as evidence of a funding "gravy train" for scientists conducting research into the area.

The grants were awarded following successful applications made by Professor Phil Jones, who headed up the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia.

The money is largely for research into the effects of global warming and is in addition to the main government education grant awarded to the university.

Prof Jones has stood aside as head of the CRU while an independent inquiry investigates thousands of emails and other documents stolen from the university's computer server and published on the internet.

Climate change sceptics point to an email written by one scientist in November 1999 as evidence of manipulation of the figures to mask falling global temperatures.

"I've just completed Mike's Nature [the science journal] trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (ie, from 1981 onwards) and from 1961 for Keith's to hide the decline," the email said.

In another email, the death of a leading climate change sceptic is described as "cheering news".

The emails are being used by climate change sceptics to allege that attempts were made to manipulate data to "prove" the existence of man-made climate change.

They also allegedly point to efforts to block Freedom of Information requests by sceptics. Allegations that data was altered and FOI requests blocked have been vigorously denied.

The spreadsheet listing all successful grant applications made by Professor Jones was part of the batch of leaked documents. It shows Professor Jones, along with other academics at the university, received more than 50 separate grants with a value of £13.7 million from a number of

Excellent Post

Follow the money that is what climate change is all about. They think that they will be funded for their entire career.

It was all created to fund Universities and it go out into the political sprectrum then they use it against humanity.

We need to stop tenure.

“’Climategate’ professor Phil Jones awarded £13 million in research grants”

Any more questions about why “scientists” prefer manmade global warming to the truth?

The universities are as complicit in this as are people like Phil Jones. He brings in the money and they like that, science and truth be damned.

"The CRU has come under scrutiny since the emergence of the emails which have been hugely damaging to the climate change lobby ahead of the UN climate change summit in Copenhagen. It has been reported the CRU database was hacked into some time ago but the emails released to maximise the impact ahead of Copenhagen which begins tomorrow.

I call BS as it has been reported numerous occasions the initial release of information by the alleged hacker/leaker was to the BBC whom sat on the information.

The hacker/leaker then posted the information to the internet when it became obvious the BBC was not going to release the information.

Yes, and that is why government grants should be eliminated and replaced with “Prize Money” available for solving a specifically defined problem. i.e. the prize Rutan got when he was able to make the first flight into space of a private entity.

I’ve been saying this all along. An academic scientist only gets research grants if he toes the party line. And since the government agencies and foundations that provide such grants are all biased to the left, inevitably only leftist scientists will succeed.

This applies to hiring, tenure, and promotion as well. Deans and Department Chairs are perfectly well aware what kind of professors are going to get the grants and prestige that help fund their departments and universities.

“Within one month of taking office President Obama secured $80 billion for renewable energy and green infrastructure and then just

two weeks ago the House of Representatives passed the Waxman-Markey Bill also known as the American Clean Energy and Security Act which for all of its flaws does put a price on carbon and is very much a step in the right direction.”

They also hand transferred money through Switzerland at amounts intended to be missed by international banking regulations:

http://www.eastangliaemails.com/emails.php

7 Mar 96 Shiyatov tells Briffa "Also, it is important for us if you can transfer the ADVANCE money on the personal accounts which we gave you earlier and the sum for one occasion transfer (for example, during one day) will not be more than 10,000 USD. Only in this case we can avoid big taxes and use money for our work as much as possible. Please, inform us what kind of documents and financial reports we must represent you and your administration for these money."

Mon, 17 Jun 96 Stepan Shiyatov said to Briffa "We hoped to use some money of the ADVANCE project. But we have not received this money until now and the program of collecting during this summer will be reduced. Some days ago I received an information that the INTAS-RFBR project was rejected. The competition was very high."

17 Sep 1996 Keith Briffa to Mike Salmon "Dear Stepan I have received the receipts. Thankyou.

5 May 97 Stepan Shiyatov says "After our long silence we would like inform you about our sucesses, problems and plans." and says "That is why we and E.Vaganov ask you to transfer each of us 7-8.000 USD until the end of June from the ADVANCE project, if it is possible. Last summer, when I was in England, you promised to help us with money to organise field works this year."

5 June, 1997 Stepan Shiyatov says "anderstanding your difficulties with transfering money and I think the best way for us if you will bring money to Krasnoyarsk and I give you a receipt."

17 Jun 97 Stepan Shiyatov repeats 5 June, 1997 email

9 Sep 1998 "Stepan G. Shiyatov" says to Briffa "Rashit could not be able to go to the Yamal Peninsula for collecting subfossil wood this summer as a result of deficiency of money. I am glad that we have been successful in INTAS proposal. Financial situation in our country so terrible that we will not work successfully without support from international grants. Yesterday I have sent by post the signed form (official power of attorney). If you have any additional information concerning this grant, please give me know."

Oct 2 1998 Keith Briffa sends email to stepan and evag "I have received the real signed Power Of Attorney form from Stepan , but not from Eugene. It seems I must have both . I am a bit reluctant to forge Eugene's signature! We will need to think about how the money should be handled" and goes on to say "I have looked at the remaining money and I think I can give you each a final payment of between 4000 and 4500 US dollars.

And more......

Oct 6 2000 Briffa tells Stepan and Eugene "I have asked INTAS for an extension on the report period. Stepan some problem has now arisen regarding your final payment . I have asked Janet to sort this out and contact you directly."

31 May 2001 Stepan Shiyatov tells Briffa "I have sent you the necessary form to transfer the money for my name, but the Ekaterinburg Branch of Bank for Foreing Trade did not receive the money until now. Do you know the reason?"

Jun 8 2001 Briffa appologizes to Stepan Shiyatov "I still expect we will get the money outstanding - just late . Sorry."

'Climategate' professor Phil Jones awarded £13 million in research grants

I'm sorry. And how many "climate scientists" are out there again?

I believe I've heard "thousands". They're not ALL getting taxpayer money to conduct "research" are they?

AHEM!
