EPA Poised to Declare CO2 a Public Danger
The Wall Street Journal ^ | DECEMBER 5, 2009 | Ian Talley

WASHINGTON--The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will early next week, possibly as soon as Monday, officially declare carbon dioxide a public danger, a trigger that could mean regulation for emitters across the economy, according to several people close to the matter.

Such an "endangerment" decision is necessary for the EPA to move ahead early next year with new emission standards for cars. EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson has said it could also mean large emitters such as power stations, cement kilns, crude-oil refineries and chemical plants would have to curb their greenhouse gas output.

The announcement would also give President Barack Obama and his climate envoy negotiating leverage at a global climate summit starting next week in Copenhagen, Denmark and increase pressure on Congress to pass a climate bill that would modify the price of polluting.

While environmentalists celebrate EPA's authority to regulate greenhouse gases, it has caused many large emitters to cringe at the potential costs of compliance.

According to a preliminary endangerment finding published in April, EPA scientists fear that man-made carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases are contributing to a warming of the global climate. Senior EPA officials said in November the agency would likely make a final decision in December around the time of the summit.

Joe Mendelson, Global Warming Policy Director for National Wildlife Federation, said the endangerment decision, would happen at "absolutely the right time."

"With House legislation passed, a bipartisan Senate bill in the works, and strong EPA action a virtual certainty, the president goes to Copenhagen with a very strong hand to play," Mr. Mendelson said.

The EPA declaration would also ratchet up the pressure on U.S. lawmakers to pass legislation that analysts say would cut emissions in a more economically efficient way. Although the House has passed a climate bill, movement of similar

Heres what I think is happening. Obama knows that the Senate won't sign any treaty that comes out of Copenhagen. If the Senate ratified treaty had any chance at all, it was killed by climategate. So Obama moved his visit to Copenhagen to the last day to give any treaty that comes out of it as much momentum it could have. Then he will use the "all those other countries did it" argument to give the EPA as much cover as he can get them to do exactly what a treaty would do if it was ratified. The EPA without any protection from the legislative process will do what they/Obama please.

"The EPA's Ms. Jackson and President Obama's energy and climate czar Carol Browner have said they would prefer Congress to take action but are prepared to move ahead in the absence of lawmakers crafting their own law".

300 Million plus humans spew out CO2 at a never ending rate. What is the EPA going to do to humans? Tax us for spewing CO2? Will the gov make us wear a monitor tracking how many exhales we make and if we exceed the gov’s daily allowance, will we be sent of to the Gov’s version of Auschwitz?

No, they will make up a proxy measurement which will turn out to be grossly inflated, but not before it has served its purpose, which is, of course, to send us to EPA Auschwitz.

I have posted before that the EPA is an agency run a muck.

It has already done terrible harm to our country.

It has destroyed the lumber business on the west coast, severely damaged the automobile and truck business, on and on.

But this is the most dangerous of all. This is a danger to our freedom beyond anything else ever proposed.

For instance, it gives the EPA the power to control every piece of equipment in the country. Lawn mowers, boats, farm equipment, emergency generators, electrical applianced (because electricity is manufactured with co2 producing equipment.

Cattle, house pets, birth control; what is left?

Someone already made the joke “eat the dog”.

This can not be allowed. We have real live nut cases running our government.

Please, come to Alaska and tell the huge majority of us who heat our homes with wood that we need to stop spewing CO2 pollution and start using an alternative source of energy.

Here’s what I think is happening: Obama and the left has found another way to control the population. It’s a glacial slow coup d’etat, like the Bolsheviks taking over the country, but they’re doing it so slowly that most of us don’t notice. Everything that combusts a fuel produces C02 - therefore, individuals can be controlled. And folks need health care... and college loans are now controlled by the government, something which passed by practically without comment... and most mortgages are now under government control... yep, there’s a pattern here. And that’s just what has been done in the past year. Instead of storming the palace, the left has decided to spend years getting to know those in power, and slowly, over decades, put in place a little thing here and a little thing there, and now we’re at the end game - the elites with their dachas and Lear jets headed to Copenhagen, while the peasants lose their jobs and get taxed into poverty.

Well screw the fascist EPA. Let the EPA send its divisions into the states and enforce its illegal dictates. ( I’m looking forward to that)

The EPA has zero - none - constitutional authority to write law,

Only Congress may write law, as stated in the constitution.

And please, spare me your authoritarian and bizarre reasonIng that congress can give away its law-making authority to unelected, unaccountable bureaucrats.

This guy is taking a chainsaw to the economy. Maybe power plant owners should go on strike for a few days to let people know what to expect.

To curb power use we should shut the power off to all non military federal buildings at noon. We can turn it back on at 10:00 A.M.

What is amazing is the IGNORANCE of this. CO2? Look it up, it is a “nothing” gas compared to water vapor’s ability to hold heat (i.e. clouds). These people are smoking dope and the people that follow and believe them are simply IGNORANT. No wonder Obama won the election with have the populace unable to point out Afghanistan on a map or know who the Vice President is/was. Culprit? The damned school system in this country ... the commies took it over years ago and we are reaping the result. CO2 indeed ... SUCH STUPIDITY. This is why we spend the budget we do on schools? Kids are better taught at home, PERIOD!

This whole “greenhouse effect” thing has missed one rather obvious and vital component of said effect: there needs to be a PHYSICAL barrier to keep the heated air in, otherwise said air rises and is cooled by its surroundings.

This is absolutely psychotic. When we exhale, we exhale carbon dioxide, CO2. Of the 745mt of CO2 released into the atmosphere each year, just 8mt is the result of man. That's about 0.94% of the total. 3mt of that 7mt is absorbed by the oceans(0.40%of total/43%of man-made CO2), 2mt remains in the atmosphere(0.27%of total/28.5%of man-made) and 2mt is taken up by other means, mostly plant life. . Human production of 8 Gt C per year of CO2 is negligible as compared with the 40,000 Gt C residing in the oceans and biosphere

See data at the Global Warming Petition Project: Here

Well .. the only way to stop CO2 is to KILL ALL THE PEOPLE!

CO2 is what we exhale .. and what trees need to grow .. and when trees grow they give off oxygen .. which we need to breathe. What a great plan. If we remove all the CO2 - we will kill all the trees - and then we’ll have no oxygen to breathe. Is anybody getting this ..??

I don’t need to be a scientist to know that information, I learned it in basic biology!

This is truly the limit. Dictates by bureaucrats. It’s the middle finger held up into our faces.

It’s truly a dictatorship when an appointed Bureaucrat assumes they can tell the Representatives of the people in Congress what will, or will not be.

Is Obama going to avoid comment to dodge responsibility?
