Huckabee Was Correct and America Needs Such Principled Leadership
American Daily Review ^ | 12/06/2009 | Yomin Postelnik

Posted on 12/05/2009 11:19:27 PM PST by Yomin Postelnik

There is currently a move underway to discredit Mike Huckabee over the rightful pardoning of a then 16 year old who had been sentenced to 108 years on robbery charges. I make this statement as someone who fully supports the death penalty for murderers and for child rapists, but also as someone who recognizes that getting tough on crime means fostering sensible rehabilitation, not turning first time offenders into violent career criminals.

Yes, Governor Huckabee pardoned more people than most governors do. That’s because Gov. Huckabee isn’t thoughtless, callous or cruel and recognizes that public service actually entails service to the public. Sentencing a 16 year old to months of hard labor generally serves as the greatest deterrent (except in cases of murder and the like). By contrast, sentencing a teen to years in prison has almost inevitably bred nothing more than a violent menaces to society.

Clemmons also had the backing of Pulaski County Circuit Judge Marion Humphrey, who urged the board to grant clemency. Humphrey later presided over Clemmons' 2004 wedding in his court chambers.

That is the entirety of what is said about Judge Humphrey in the article you linked to. It really doesn't say much at all. It is even a little confusing, at least to me, because I thought it was the governor who granted clemencies and the board (I assume they mean 'parole board') that grants paroles.

It doesn't contradict the account I posted above in logic since Judge Humphrey could have previously restructured Clemmons' sentence AND urged the board (or the Governor, whichever) to grant clemency. Those two things are hardly mutually exclusive. It has been said that Judge Humphrey has a reputation of being soft on criminals.

Clemmons was among 1,033 people who were pardoned or had their sentences reduced during Huckabee's 10 1/2 years as governor, a number that far surpasses that of his three predecessors combined. Bill Clinton, Frank White and Jim Guy Tucker granted 507 clemencies in the 17 1/2 years they served. Beebe, Huckabee's Democratic successor, has issued 273 commutations and pardons since taking office in January 2007 — all but one of them were pardons after the completion of the inmates' prison terms.

I think that's the most interesting part of the article you linked and it's not an opinion it is apparently an objective fact.

From my post #258:

"When Huckabee’s office received Clemmons clemency petition the ONLY person that was contacted and given a chance to object to clemency was Judge Humphrey. Although she had already reduced Clemmons sentence, she agreed with the clemency petition."

That agrees with the account you linked to. I don't see any conflict between the two reports.

I’ll say. Thick tall waders to get through the muck. I have no time for people who have no manners & are rude to fellow FReepers & call them names. The mods ought to review the harassment on this thread. I also don’t like Huckabee & I now blame him for pardoning Clemmons & I hope he never runs for any office. Before this thread I wasn’t so against Huckabee, I felt he made a mistake, but we are all human... Since all this nonsense I wouldn’t want him as a dog catcher either as he would let the rabid dogs loose. I would like to see a list of how many people he let out of jail early who have since committed more crimes.

Here is the link to Clemmons Clemency petition, parole hearing from 2001 and 2004. Open up the damned things and read them.

I fully expect an apology to me after you’ve read the original documents, which is where the information I provided came from.

It is customary when talking about another Freeper to ping that Freepers, which you did not do.

Here’s the link, I expect your apology shortly.

If you don’t see the difference between the outlandish “failed to notify corrections staff and the like” vs. a he said he said with the prosecutor who claims that sometimes clemency consideration notices didn’t get to him and believes this to be the case with Clemmons, then I can’t really help you.

Ping Brytani yourself as you’re only on here to stir up trouble.

See my last post to TigerEyes. Then go over this thread and lecture him about pinging. I see nothing in that file about failure to notify corrections staff - which is invariably untrue - and I had no idea who TigerEyes was referring to, hence you weren’t pinged. I read the snippet he sent, not an entire forum thread.

The point is he notified corrections staff and claim to the contrary that you posted is without merit.

I think it’s pretty clear from following the sequence of the thread and am not sure why you see the need to deviate from the point at hand.

Ping Brytani yourself as you’re only on here to stir up trouble.

I suggest we end this now. You are the one here who wants to cause trouble if we don't agree with you. You have said you are only on this thread to debate TigersEye. (BS too you only want to fight) You are the one who has the google past & problems. Nobody else. You are the one pushing Huckabee down our throats. You are the one who refuses to ping a FReeper when using their name. You are the one with the political agenda, not any of us. Why you are here starting trouble I am not sure but it needs to stop. You didn't allow that site to stay, the owner of the site has posted all about you. None of it making you look too good either. We should believe you..... Why? I think everyone should look at it & see for themselves what you are all about. You have been insulting & attacking people when they disagree with you. Not very smart for somebody who is trying to run for an office.TigersEye has done nothing but give his opinion & facts. All of which you disagree with. That is your right. It is not your right to push your opinion down our throats. Have a nice day.

- and I had no idea who TigerEyes was referring to,...

Are you stupid, illiterate or, as I said before, just a liar. The post I put up was obviously made by Brytani and you were the one who said "Seems like someone with an agenda, or who can’t follow the facts, is distorting key aspects of what happened in an effort to smear - and I’m talking about whoever wrote that, not you."

You definitely owe her an apology and everyone else on this thread. Particularly pandoraou812 whom you have insulted repeatedly for no reason other than you are an uncultured idiot.

I never said any of that so I don't know what you're talking about.

Ping Brytani yourself as you’re only on here to stir up trouble.

I did ping her. It was you who failed to have the common courtesy to ping her and other posters you bring up in your posts. I posted information that contradicted your position that no one objected to Clemmons' clemency. If your position is so weak you can't respond to that then just drop out but that is in no way "stirring up trouble."

Pandora,
I think you are right about ending this. If you look over the sequence of this thread you’ll find that all substantive remarks were answered factually. When you and TigersEye start a heated tag team with outlandish character attacks it should have indeed stopped there and gone unanswered.
The extent of your substantive remarks are a) that some people can’t be rehabilitated (true - but by arguing that a teen robber who became violent only upon facing life should have been denied parole - your argument more resembles “no one can be rehabilitated) and b) comparisons of rapists and murderers to teen aged robbers. Like liberals, when you can no longer argue facts, you resort to ad hominem attacks.

There are no words for Tiger’s nonsense. Quoting another poster’s inaccurate statement as fact and then claiming that he never made such a statement is just the latest example of his typical. He generally goes to great lengths to call anyone who he disagrees with liars and spin idiotic arguments into grand spirals so that no one can deal with the subject at hand - almost always on threads related to religion. I tried to meet his accusations, insults and inanities with comic relief - but it’s wrong to feed him -period.

He’s now the pinging police, after failing to ping in numerous direct attacks on this thread (not that I care in the least - but it does show why no one takes him seriously). His responses are typical of other inanities and absurdities that he uses on all threads discussing religion. I hope for his sake that Ping Police is a paid job. Like I said, I wear his ridiculous accusations as a badge of honor.

I’d suggest you rethink your anti-Huckabee biases as they are and the great lengths that you and Tiger go to in attacking anyone who supports him. He’s by far the most electable candidate we have and besides, there’s been a concerted effort to discredit all GOP frontrunners (Huck, Palin, etc.) that you are only playing into.

If you have anything to say of substance, I’ll be glad to respond. If you want to go on with rants that have little to do with Huck then start a new thread about what a terrible, monstrous kitten eaten I am - by my own admission (for the purposes of this thread) and have fun. I won’t respond.

I hope that TigersEye at least finds a measure of needed solace in the fact that he has now been pinged on post 279. May it give you much joy and happiness.
