A six month campaign! They are going to spend too much money on this.

Ours is around Labor Day. Thank heavens they haven’t started campaigning full time yet. So you have nine months to be unhappy with the GOP candidates?

If the primary was 6 months later we'd have a better chance of beating liberal RINO Mark Kirk.

Our primary is the first week in Feb. because the state legislature moved it back in 2008 so we could be part of "Super Tuesday" and have more impact on the Presidential election. Here in Illinois we hold our Presidential primary and state offices primary on the SAME ballot (which is a wise, money-saving measure, IMO, compared to nutty states like NH having a presidential primary when it's freezing in Jan. and then have a U.S. Senate primary weeks before the Nov. general election)

But yes, in this case it helps RINOs like Mark Kirk win primaries because they can just stay aloof and run out the clock before enough GOP voters are aware of their horrible record. Then we're stuck with them "representing" our party for the next 9 months.

Perhaps the most practical solution would be to have a nationwide primary election sometime in April. The "send everything on the planet back to the states" freepers won't like that idea though.

Even before that it was in March IIRC. Still too early. No one needs a GE campaign that long.

In some states I think it’s a wee bit too close to November when they hold it (like Florida). I think a summer primary would be good. And none of the liberal college kids would around to demand to be allowed to vote in their college towns.

I think states should have their state primaries when they want but I’d prefer a national (and closed) primary for President (most people don’t like the idea) with a ranked ballot. The nomination process is seriously flawed and the primary season way too long.

The reason people always give for opposing a national presidential primary is that it would make it impossible for anyone other than a frontrunner to win because insurgent candidates wouldn’t be able to gain momentum (and be able to raise money to compete in other states) by winning primaries in a couple of early states. I can’t say that I disagree with that.
