Students at the University of Colorado are being told by campus police that their planned game of "Humans vs. Zombies" must be canceled because of a campus ban on toys that look like guns.
The planned game would divide participants into "humans" and "zombies" with the human team defending themselves with NERF guns. Campus police "[fear] they could be painted to look like a real weapon and someone could become alarmed and notify authorities, who would have to respond."
"If we have people playing a game and someone happens to be walking and sees someone crouched down with something that looks like a weapon, then they call us, we're going to respond," said campus police spokesman Mollie Bosley.

I remember two movies from the '80s that played on that theme. One was Gotcha!, the other, I can't remember the name, but the plot was that someone was taking the game too far and actually killing students.

We did do, and that was just 4 years ago, though at a conservative Christian school.

Colleges that have their own “police” (refuse to call them police even if they are officially that) sometimes have ridiculous rules.
Now only outlaws will have Nurf Guns.

Dang. In the early ‘80s the campus murder game was “Assassin.”
Players were issued plastic toy pistols that shot soft suction-cup-tipped darts. You could only load a single round; you had to cock the gun and load another dart for a follow-up shot.
Each player was initially assigned another player as a “target.” If you succeeded in shooting your target, you took over hunting his/her target.
Some rules were required to make it sporting:
1. You were allowed to shoot only: (a) your target; (b) someone who just tried to shoot you; or (c) a player wearing a mask. If you shot someone OTHER than your target, someone who just took a shot at you, or a masked assassin, you were disqualified.
2. Unless you wore a mask, there could be no more than two witnesses when you shot your target. If there were more, the shot didn’t count, (and the target was free to shoot you).
3. The two-witness rule did NOT apply to an assassin wearing a MASK, as long as he/she put on the mask in private.
4. Classrooms and dorm rooms were “safe” zones—no shooting allowed.
The two-witness rule taught players to try to stay in well-populated areas when not in class or in their rooms. This lead to more and more masked-assassin attacks. You’d be eating dinner and suddenly someone would shout “mask!!!” You’d look up to see a masked gunman running through the dining hall, racing towards his target while dodging shots from every other player in the room. It was really fun.
Can you imagine trying this today?

This is the University of Colorado we're talking about. The school where the faculty and administration mistook Ward Churchill for a legitimate academic professional and hired him as a direct-to-tenure professor. And where plenty of students protested his firing, even after it came to light that virtually his entire resume was lies.

We’d get these types of calls from time to time. I’d respond with “Ok. Is he doing something wrong?” The response would always be “He’s carrying a firearm and people are concerned.” My response would be something along the lines of “Oh well. He’s within the law. Nothing we can do.”
There are fewer and fewer Americans left on this continent.
