Conservative South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint (R) will endorse Texas Railroad Commissioner Michael Williams' Senate candidacy later today, a move designed to thin the GOP field running to replace Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R).
"Democrats are trying to catch Republicans flat-footed and pick off the Texas Senate seat," said a source close to DeMint who was granted anonymity to speak candidly about strategic matters. "This endorsement will signal its time for conservatives and independents to rally behind Michael."
The seat is not formally vacant yet as Hutchison has delayed her planned resignation until after her March 2 primary fight against Gov. Rick Perry (R). Assuming she does resign, a special election will be held in 2010 although Perry would have the opportunity appoint a temporary replacement until the special is held.

First, there might not be a race until 2012. Hutchison may exercise her prerogative to “change her mind” about leaving.
Second, I don’t know if Republican voters want Michael Williams; there are two Hutchison-style women in the race if it opens up.
Third, I am not sure if overall voters will support Williams though they have backed him three times for a lower—tier race, Railroad Commission (Public Service Commission in other statesi).
Fourth, Democrat John Sharp is likely to claim one of the runoff berths. Williams would be a good choice if we can elect him.
DeMint is jumping the gun a bit as there isn’t a race to endorse yet and attempting to thin the herd may not be that smart at this time. The Texas Mar. 2nd primary hasn’t been held and who knows what will happen based upon that outcome. Thus it’s not known for sure who would be the potential candidates or even there will be a vacancy.
lonestar endorses Williams...and can vote.
I second that. Williams—unlike most of those clowns in office—is NOT afraid of Obama
