Well, yes. Dammned Yankee would be appropriate. You and my Mother-in-Law would get along just fine, after 10+ years she still introduces me as "My son in law, the Yankee Republican".

I will say that I try very hard NOT to use the phrase "Back Home we used to do it like......" LOL! I figure that if I want to do it the way it was done back home, then I can go back there. When in Rome, etc etc.

But, I'll let you in on a secret...Mainers (the "natives" at least) don't especially like folks from Boston, NY, NJ, either. The running joke up there is that Maine split from Massachusetts in 1820, and Boston has been buying the state back, one house lot at a time.

What I find striking in this issue is that "work" refers to "barely", not "hard". Sweep floors or spread pine straw for a half-hour and you'll eat for a day. Collect & recycle soda cans - 60 isn't a lot in light of a day's food.

Lost in many of these "social safety net" discussions is the subjects of "haves vs. have-nots" is not a binary dichotomy, but a spectrum where those being addressed are nearly non-existent (ex.: almost nobody is incapable of earning at least $3/day).

Rachel Ray has the accent, but I don't think that she talks fast enough for someone from NYC. When I was there, sometimes I felt like I was listening to a 33 record playing at 78.

I'm in IT, and for the longest time I used to trip Southerners up. When I came to fix an issue, rather than going through the long preamble of "How are you, and your kids, and all the relatives, and the weather, and the job, and did you see the game last night and...." ....I'd either just ask "So, what needs fixing" or, just sit down and start fixing the problem.

I just didn't know any better. Southerners just didn't know how to deal with it.

After a good bit down here, I've decided that slower *is* better. I'll live longer. But sometimes, I'd just like to communicate what needs to be communicated (like with my neighbor that I don't get along very well with...just say "shut your $#@#$ dog up") and skip all of the pleasantries.

There’s a time for work, but that comes after we get the really important issues out of the way, like how your Mama and all your family are doin’ , what you thought about State’s win last Sat and how the hot/cold temps and precipitation are affecting you and yours. LOL The computer isn’t going anywhere so it will still be broken and waiting for you after we have had our little visit.

The pleasantries are signs of civilization. Back in the 60’s my grandmother used to counter the “let it all hang out” mantra with this rejoinder. “Why would we want to let it all hang out? It has taken us centuries to tuck it all in.”

Yeah, I know. But can I still dislike my neighbor because he has 6 dogs (excuse me, dawgs) that bark every time I go out on my own back porch? :-)

And, I suppose, that Maine has pleasantries too. They're just different. As in:

"Lots of Snow today, hunh?"

"Yup. That was some storm, wan't it?"

"Yup." (short pause) "Now are we goin' to start shovelin', or stand around jawin' all day?"
