Progressives go to War over…War

The purpose of all war is peace—Saint Augustine: The City of God

While President Barack Obama was in Oslo, Norway yesterday accepting his Nobel Peace Prize (while at the same time justifying his troop surge in Afghanistan), back home Congressman and fellow progressive Democrat Dennis Kucinich was busy metaphorically pulling the red carpet out from under him by denouncing the surge and demanding an immediate withdrawal of all troops from that country.

Amy Goodman reported on both events on Democracy Now!, a network which represents the Marxist ideology, an ideology which is itself no stranger to war and destruction. From the Obama speech, this highlight:

President Obama: I receive this honor with deep gratitude and great humility. It is an award that speaks to our highest aspirations, that for all the cruelty and hardship of our world, we are not mere prisoners of fate. Our actions matter and can bend history in the direction of justice.

A nice excerpt, but the real emphasis was on the Kucinich Story:

Democracy Now!: As the US gears up to escalate the Afghan war, Congress member Dennis Kucinich says he plans to force a House vote on withdrawing all US forces from Afghanistan and Pakistan. On Wednesday, Kucinich announced he is seeking co-sponsors for a resolution calling for a “timely withdrawal” from the AfPak [Afghanistan/Pakistan] region. Kucinich expects to introduce the measure next month.

Kucinich’s resolution raises some key points, which contradict Obama on nearly every issue. While in Oslo, Obama justified sending the additional troops as the only way to: “disrupt, dismantle and defeat al Qaeda in Afghanistan and Pakistan and to prevent its capacity to threaten America and our allies in the future.”

That article got moved; hopefully we can find it. In the meantime, this from the “Air America Place” site:

There, I said it. The emperor is naked. Starkers. The Full Monty. An em-bare-ass-ment to the world.

>>I’ll bet that two years from now, we’ll be asking for even more troop’s in Afghanistan. It never ends, no matter who’s president.

AND
>>As a result of their principled beliefs, Ron Paul or Dennis Kucinich will never be allowed to be elected.

Ted S posts:
>>I’d be willing to bet you’re wrong about that. I’d guess that either Democrat Dennis Kucinich or Republican Ron Paul would have already begun to pull troops out of both Iraq and Afghanistan had either won the election. I could be wrong but these two gentlemen seem to be driven more by principal than politics.

Our first progressive President Woodrow Wilson was not opposed to war and neither was the first nominee of the Progressive Party Theodor Roosevelt. Wilson twice invaded Mexico, sent troops into Haiti, Santo Domingo, Panama, and Nicaragua. He also sent men and arms into Russia to help the White Russians against the Bolsheviks. Then there was WWI which like Obama, Wilson dithered over before committing troops. When he finally asked congress for a declaration of war he declared that we were not seeking victory and that we were not fighting the German People but only the Kaiser.

***Our first progressive President Woodrow Wilson was not opposed to war***

Yet he was re elected on the platform of “HE KEPT US OUT OF WAR” and the most popular song at that time was “I didn’t raise my boy to be a soldier”.
Two years later our men were in the trenches of Europe.

The invasions of Mexico and the rest of Latin America occurred during his first term but since they were undeclared wars I guess they don’t count as real wars.

Democracy Now! plays on PBS. I wonder how much of our taxes go toward supporting this spread of Marxism. You don’t see equal time for other points of view.
