Houston, Texas has become the largest city in the United States to elect an openly gay mayor after City Controller Annise Parker was declared the winner of a runoff election tonight. Social conservatives fought her election, funding a campaign aimed at turning out likeminded voters to support her opponent, former city attorney Gene Locke. But Parker's endorsements from labor, police, women's, gay rights and other groups were echoed by the Houston Chronicle, the area's major daily newspaper, and her campaign ran a superior get-out-the-vote effort.

This is not the first time Houston has had a Lesbian mayor. Kathy Whitmire was elected like in the early ‘90’s as mayor of Houston.

There’s a whole elite G/L community down there. Has been for years.

How can Texas get punked like this.

Pretty simple: (1) Black vs. White, and Hispanics don't like Black; (2) Black vs. White and the dyke hired a savvy Republican media org. to do a massive mailing to Republicans at the last minute

We have a lesbo Sheriff, Lupe Valdez here in Dallas who has been elected twice using the same exact game plan. And we just missed out on having a Gay Mayor in the last election.

All of the big cities in Texas have been overrun by libs. Houston, Dallas, Austin and even San Antonio are all liberal enclaves. The smaller towns and rural areas are still conservative.

I didn’t see it in this article, but the NYT said, “Throughout the campaign, Ms. Parker tried to avoid making an issue of her sexual orientation and emphasized her experience in overseeing the city’s finances.”

I hope this is true. If she isn’t making an issue of her orientation, we shouldn’t either.

The least liberal of the two candidates won, and that is good for Houston.

I’m not sure why so many would see this as a defeat for conservatism.

Mayoral lesbianism is a subject that has long fascinated me. Thanks for posting.

From out in space: “Houston, we have a problem.”

Houston: “Can’t help you. We’re still working on how many lesbians does it take to screw in a lightbulb?”

Because Annise doesn’t have a conservative bone in her body...at least Locke had some conservatives pulling his strings.

The only big name Republican who supported Annise is Betsy Lake...and Houston Freepers already know how conservative she really is. Other than that she had a mailer by Roy Morales-—which she paid him over $50,000 to send out.

But I guess pay to play is the name of the game here.

When we get a chance to look at these election results by precinct, you will find that the most liberal or Democratic precincts voted for Locke and conservative or GOP voted for Parker.

Gene Locke got the black precincts (which are traditionally Dem) so obviously he’ll get some heavy Dem areas. There are no traditional conservative areas in the city with the exception of Kingwood and Memorial areas. Annise won because she got gays and white liberals. She probably did get some help from Roy “Pay to play” Morales’s mailer though.
