Texas city elects openly gay mayor

The southern city of Houston has become the largest US metropolis to elect an openly gay mayor when Annise Parker, an open lesbian, claimed a solid victory over her rival.

"I know what this win means to many of us who thought we could never achieve high office," she said in her victory speech, at which she introduced her partner Kathy and their three children, according to the Houston Chronicle.

"I understand, because I feel it, too. But now, from this moment, let us join as one community," said Parker, 53.

According to local election data, Democrat Parker won about 53 percent of the vote and opponent Gene Locke, also a Democrat, took 47 percent.

The population of the Texas city is about 2.2 million.

Throughout her campaign, Parker enjoyed the support of gay and lesbian political organizations nationwide, though she did not make her sexual orientation a key issue in the campaign.

Several smaller US cities already have openly gay mayors, including Portland, Oregon; Providence, Rhode Island; and Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Parker has worked in the Houston city administration for the last 11 years -- first on the city council, and for the last five years as city controller.

She spent 20 years in the oil and gas industry before entering public service.

Whoa. How could a city in one of America's conservative southern states ever elect an open lesbian, Annise Parker, as mayor of Houston?

Decades ago, there would have been no gay or lesbian in high offices like mayors in Texas.

This is how the people of Houston have become halfheartedly cold towards our Lord Jesus Christ. They have spat in his face.

Wot, Jesus hates fags? I do love Christians who think that since God is Love, they have to do His hatin’ for Him.

Considering Ms. Parker’s oppenent was another flaming liberal, what difference would it have made had that person won?

This election was much like the past Presidential election....no real candidates to vote for. McCain/Obama.....Locke/Parker. Locke would have been a financial disaster for Houston. I just hope Houston does not become like San Francisco with Parker as Mayor.

Why does gay/normal matter? What matters is if the person is sensible in the head, or a raving liberal. I would not vote for a raving liberal no matter who he/she/it sleeps with.

There is a coalition that can elect such people. Break down the demographics of those supporting her.

Who gives an Obama about whether or not she’s gay? That should not even be a headline. Only weak-minded “journalists” with a mind-spectrum consisting of two colors would give a care.

Now, if she’s a liberal, I f*rt in her general direction. And if she’s a lib, she’ll f*art in the general direction of Houston.

They’ll soon learn.

Hate has nothing to do with it. It is a matter of judgment, which homosexuals, by their very lifestyles, lack. Period.

Houston, you have a problem. You’ll be sooooooooooooorry!

though she did not make her sexual orientation a key issue in the campaign.

When you bring Barney Franks in to fund raise, you have made it an issue.

And you think someone, anyone, can be considered “sensible” if they do not know what their own body parts are for? If they openly hate biology and live their own reality? That defies logic.

Houston and Austin have no business being in Texas, frankly. They'd be more at home in Maine or California.

Not as liberal as Austin.

Houston is over 50% Mexican.....so of course it’s now a liberal city. It’s all the foreigners (Mexico, California, New York, Michigan, etc.) that make it liberal. Native anglo Houstonians are conservative.

Poor Sam has rolled in his grave some much they should tie a generator to him.

Houston long fell from being a “TEXAS” city and instead is more like Juarez, Michigan.
