Speaker Pelosi named finalist for Time magazine 'Person of the Year' By Jordan Fabian - 12/14/09 05:21 PM ET

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is among the seven finalists chosen for Time magazine's annual "Person of the Year," according to media reports on Monday.

Other finalists in the realm of politics include last year's winner President Barack Obama, Afghanistan commanding Gen. Stanley McChrystal and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke.

"Look, she's the first woman Speaker of the House. She's the strongest Speaker of the House in decades," Time managing editor Richard Stengel said of Pelosi on NBC's "Today" show. "She had piloted what is probably the most important legislation in decades through the House. She's a really, really pivotal lawmaker."

Apple CEO Steve Jobs and Jamaican sprinter and Olympic Gold Medalist Usain Bolt are also included as finalists.

Another finalist is the "Chinese worker," which the magazine said has become an influential international economic power.

The award is given to an individual who has achieved a notable accomplishment in the past year. Time's editors will name the winner on Wednesday.

Every U.S. president has won the award since Time launched the tradition in 1927, with the exceptions of Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover and Gerald Ford. President George W. Bush won it it 2000 and 2004 following both of his electoral victories.

On what conceivable basis would Pelosi be nominated for this? Oh, silly me, this makes sense in a year when a man can win a nobel prize, who has done absolutely zilch.

I’m fine with it. It’s about who’s done the most, not necessarily the best. And she’s done a lot to ruin this country for sure.

Time Magazine still publishes?

I haven't seen it anywhere in the couple of months I've been home.

Wonder how Jobs feels about the Obama/Reid/Pelosi health care plan?

Apparently, there are many FReepers here, with mistaken ideas about what the TIME Magazine Person of the Year or Man of the Year (in the past) designation is about... LOL...

The designation can be for a man, woman or an idea -- and it isn't an award or who is the best. It's the one person (or the one idea) who has influenced events the most for the past year.

I would have hoped that FReepers would have been a bit more educated about the matter... :-)

TIME's Man of the Year

Since 1927, TIME Magazine has chosen a man, woman, or idea that "for better or worse, has most influenced events in the preceding year." Though TIME's list is not an academic or objective study of the past, the list gives a contemporary viewpoint of what was important during each year.

Controversy (about Person [Man] of the Year)

Despite the magazine's frequent statements to the contrary, the designation is often regarded as an honor, and spoken of as an award or prize, simply based on many previous selections of admirable people.[5] However Time magazine points out those such as Adolf Hitler in 1938, and Joseph Stalin in 1939 and again in 1942, and the Ayatollah Khomeini in 1979, have also been granted the title.

The above paragraph speaks to the misconceptions that some people have. But, certainly, since we have Free Republic, the least misconceptions about this designation, should reside here, and thus, we should not be as misled as the general public... LOL...

I would vote for Steve Jobs as the Man of the Year (ummm... "person" of the year... LOL..)

Apple CEO Steve Jobs named finalist for Time Person of the Year

By AppleInsider Staff
Published: 12:50 PM EST

Time magazine will announce its annual Person of the Year this week, and the magazine has revealed its top seven finalists, with Apple co-founder Steve Jobs making the cut.

The magazine issued its narrowed list this week, prior to the reveal scheduled to be made Wednesday on NBC's Today Show. In addition to Jobs, the finalists are President Barack Obama, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernake, U.S. Gen. Stanley McChrystal, Olympic gold medalist Usain Bolt, and "the Chinese worker."

While Time's editors have already made their decision, readers are encouraged to chime in by voting for their selection.

Jobs was named CEO of the Decade by Fortune in November. The publication heralded Jobs for his role in turning Apple into a groundbreaking leader in the technology realm, and for making his company the most valuable in all of Silicon Valley.

Those same accomplishments were acknowledged by Time as "pros" for is being named Person of the Year. The magazine also noted that the iPhone App Store surpassed a billion downloads (2 billion as of September). Users can rank each person's importance, and as of Monday afternoon, Jobs carried a score of 49 out of 100.

The magazine also listed reasons why Jobs should not be named Person of the Year: His health problems keeping him away from the company for six months of 2009, AT&T's network instability, and the arrival of competitors like the Palm Pre and devices with Google Android.

You were saying ...

Wonder how Jobs feels about the Obama/Reid/Pelosi health care plan?

Who cares? ... about that... LOL...

With Steve Jobs, I only care that he's concentrating on the business at hand with Apple and making the next great product and also improving the great products that Apple already has out there.

If Jobs opens his mouth about that, I'll just tell him to "get back to work at Apple".... LOL...

Well, although I would be voting for Palin, if and when she comes up for an election that I have a vote in -- I'm afraid she doesn't rise to the level of a person or idea who has influenced events the most for the last year.

Just with me and others believing that she's the best political person for the job (whatever that is... LOL...) doesn't mean that she's influenced the events of the past year the most of any person in the world... :-)

You were saying ...

Hitler and Stalin have both been Time’s Man of the Year.

They certainly did influence the events of the previous year the most of any person for the time when they appeared for that designation on the cover of Time... :-)

And that's what we find many times in this year is that evil often has the most effect on the world, and hence, has influenced events the most.

You were saying ...

She's so honest and helpful to the American people.

Ummmm..., honesty wasn't a criteria in the selection... LOL...

Hitler and Stalin didn't get that designation because of their honesty... :-)

You were saying ...

The person of the year is the one who released the climate change e-mails reveling the fraud of global warming. Will save us trillions and prevent us from having draconion controls placed upon our business and personal lives.

Well..., unfortunately, that hasn't resulted in something that has influenced events the most of any person in the world... LOL...

I mean, it stirred things up on the Free Republic board, but it hasn't done too much "in the world" so far, and certainly not as much as others in a real world sense.

We'll see next year whether there is any impact in the real world with this Climategate thing... it still remains to be seen what the actual results are.

You were saying ...

Is this Satire!

Well, the answer to whether this is satire or not -- is the answer to the question of whether the passing of Obamacare will be an event that will radically change your life or not... LOL...

If this person had a prime role in doing that, then it would seem that this might be such an event as designated in TIME, that being an event or person which influenced things the most for the previous year.

With Obamacare, you might be saying that... :-)

Steve Jobs gets my vote. That iphone is great, I love being able to get on the net even when I’m not in front of my computer. When I have to stand in long lines, the iphone comes out, and I start reading the articles here on Freerepublic.

I second that emotion -- and vote... LOL...

The iPhone was certainly a game-changer for millions of people, not only in the U.S. but around the world.

I use it for my reading on Free Republic, too... it's great for when you're stuck somewhere and would be twiddling your thumbs... :-)

It should be Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger and the female police officer who put down the terrorist at Ft. Hood. Two REAL American heroes!

Sorry, I wouldn't vote for her, no matter how much I would approve of her actions.

What she did simply does not meet up to the criteria of the one person or thing/event that has most influenced events of the previous year...

I would approve of her, you would too -- but she doesn't meet the criteria... sorry...

Now the Ayatollah Khomeini certainly qualified for Time’s cover... I would say... LOL...

His “effect” is still being felt today... for sure... :-)

Remember the trouble in 2001 when they wanted to name Bin Laden?

I would have voted for Osama bin Ladin... he certainly qualifies, without a doubt...

It's too bad he didn't make the cover. I wonder why he didn't?

I mean, considering that his "effects" on us all and the entire world is still being felt today -- it should be obviousl that bin Ladin should have been on that cover...
