Any idea how this compares to previous orders? Last order I placed was only 50 million rounds...

Way our cops aim, they need it.

Could just be a very expensive way to keep the ammo market tight. Limit ammo for "ordinary" gun owners and the 2A is worthless.

So, you're the one, huh? I wondered why my shipment of normally small 5 million got back-ordered.

What we have to watch out for now is a gun manufacturer getting a large contract for .40 cal weapons.

Homeland Security doesn’t need that much ammo.......

Right, since they evidently aren't using it on our borders.

Not spending money results in that money not only being returned to the treasury, but subsequent years' budgets reduced (OMB, etc, look at any surplus and project subsequent budgets down ... since an agency with a surplus just has too much money to begin with).

Spot on correct. That attitude extended to the supply lines in the military, especially in the areas of training ammo. If you requested "X" amount of ammo to qualify the battalion for M60 machine gun and you turned in "Y" amount as surplus after the qualification ranges went cold, you were ALWAYS shorted by exactly the surplus amount the next time out. It was always fun to be the senior range officer for those qualification days on every weapon in a light infantry outfit. Let the troops shoot then the range officers and safety officers get to burn up all the overages down range. Talk about your RAMBO fantasies! M60's and M2HB 50's were definitely the best, but the M203 grenade launcher was always a crowd pleaser, as well. M16 was a drag. Loading all those mags got to be a bore (pun?).

Actually, Federal HST (Hydra-Shok Two) is the successor to Hydra-Shok, and a much better expansion technology. Available currently for under $20/50 in LEO pack.

Now you tell me. Guess it's back to the bullet store for me.

My XD45 compact has just become my Every Day Carry (EDC) gun, at least when I'm not at work. It's been so long since I carried a 45 because of my weight issues that I'd switched to a 9mm (H&K P30) years ago right when the P30 first came out and I was carrying a Beretta M92 before that. Now that I've had my gastric bypass and lost 100 pounds, I'm coming home to the 45 again. Now I'm trying to decide bullet weights. I'm leaning toward the 185 gr instead of the 230. Does anybody know if Cor-Bon DPX or the Federal (?) HST comes in that weight? I also really like the Speer Gold Dots.

I just got the XD compact last week. Since then I've added two more 10rd mags and three more 13rd mags with the grip spacer AND a CROSSBREED Super tuck deluxe IWB as well. Next will come a set of Tru-Glo TFO (Tritium Fiber Optic) night sights and a CT Laser grip because as I age it's harder and harder to see my front sights clearly. The TFOs and the laser should help there. Especially the TFOs.

So? Any suggestions on brands and bullet weights for the 45 from a 4" barrel?

Also, does anybody have a contact number for Springfield Armory customer service? My gun arrived with what seems like a 30 pound or more recoil spring. It's REALLY tough to rack back the slide and I AIN'T that old yet! Even my FFL remarked on the rather extreme spring. I looked on their website and didn't see a contact ph# and I can't go there now because the work filters won't let me.

I'm no expert on the .45, but 230gr seems to work well in everything I've ever used.

Here's Springfield Armory's info:

I almost bought a Sig P250 when I was shopping for a 45 but while the trigger is super smooth and consistent, it's still DAO and sometimes that's just not quick enough. I didn't like the "revolver" feel that the trigger inspires. That's why I eventually (just last week!) decided to go with the Springfield Armory XD45 compact.

OK, so who are they going to shoot 200 million times?

As you can see this was supposed to be kidding. However some pi$$y moderator with arugula in his or her pants took it on him/herself to ban me for 3 days for mentioning this. I consider it quite shabby treatment as well as gross hypocrisy to ban me like that when the threads on this site bristle with 2nd amendment references in response to various government mischief, and less often with things like "glass them over" with respect to troublesome Iran. I earnestly request a detailed explanation.

Federal HST is top of the line.
Expansion tests, various ammo: http://frag.110mb.com/

Another is Winchester Ranger T’s (upgraded naughty black talons) — http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgxyTndj50s

...and Winchester Ranger Bonded. Winchester Bonded the government ordered for several contracts in .40 cal and 9mm. The new Winchester Supreme Elite PDX1 are Winchester Ranger Bonded in a 20 pack civilian package.

9mm I’ll only carry premium loads... +p+ 127 grain Ranger T’s for expansion, energy; 147 grain Ranger bonded for more penetration; and +p+ 115 grain Buffalo Bore Gold Dot Unicore which at 1400fps may penetrate up to a class llla vest.

Hard to find law enforcement only Ranger loadings available here:

Happy New Year Folks!

Plain .45 acp FMJ has proven performance for stopping power. Slow moving but because of the bullet mass, deep penetration. But over-penetration might be an issue(?). Some law enforcement will carry FMJ in belt mags because of the thought target would be behind barriers at that point.

Hollow-points may sometimes turn into hardball anyway due to “cottoning”...fabric catching in the cavity preventing expansion. Never know what can happen but 2 rounds to body one to head works best. Interesting observations of terminal ballistics as viewed in a morgue: http://www.gunthorp.com/Terminal%20Ballistics%20as%20viewed%20in%20a%20morgue.htm

Top brands you mentioned will do. I’d stay away from Winchester Silvertips, Glaser Safety Slugs or Frangible Ammo. Some SpecOps use +p 185grain Olin rounds.

My personal preference various ammo types loaded up (check feed-ability) for all around penance offerings.
