The Salvation Army - Naughty or Nice?

Phil Bronstein

December 14, 2009

The Salvation Army, the country's biggest charity, is taking it full on the chin from a social media network mobilized against the organization's position on homosexuality and other social sins. Twitter, Facebook and gay Web sites are lit up with protest and calls for donor boycotts.

The Army's official same-sex statement suggests it's unlikely those cheery volunteers ringing bells over red kettles will be donning gay apparel anytime soon.

While homosexuals are not "blameworthy," the statement says, "Scripture forbids sexual intimacy between members of the same sex." The Army is an unabashedly evangelical, religious entity, after all, and has also resisted domestic partner benefits for its employees.

Last month, there was another stink about the Army's Houston division demanding to see Social Security cards of needy parents before providing toys for their kids. Angry protesters claimed this was discrimination against cardless illegal immigrants.

Before we take the predictable San Francisco, to-the-barricades view on all this, let's consider the Catholic concept of "proportionalism." This means (roughly, my interpretation) that bad conduct can be acceptable if a much greater good is being accomplished.

...so Gay groups are planning on “getting” the Salvation Army by putting the screws to the poor people the Salvation Army helps?

Am I reading that right?

SS numbers not needed for Salvation Army gifts
Newsroom

HOUSTON (AP) Families signing up their children for The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program in the Houston area will no longer have to give a Social Security number.

Some had seen the practice as a way to check immigration status, but the charity said it was a way to cut down on fraud.

The Christian charity says the number could be a child or parent’s and was enough to register the entire family.

It was used to check if families were going to various Salvation Army centers and registering at each one, said spokesman Juan Alanis. Social Security numbers were never used to verify legal status, the Salvation Army said Thursday.

The charity accepts consular identification cards, school records and birth certificates as forms of ID, Alanis said.

Salvation Army gets my vote here!

Another thing — Do not shop at Target for Christmas — and tell them why in January.

They (Target) will not allow the Salvation Army Bell Ringers outside their stores. I’m proud to say I have never stepped a foot inside a Target store.

Gee, I wish I’d seen this BEFORE I made my charity decisions for the CFC.

Well, I’ll just have to make a point of dropping some money into the pot.

I saw a TV show a few years ago about an apartment building the Salvation Army maintains in Paris. They specialize in taking young women—many of them victims of abuse by parents or boyfriends, some of whom had turned to prostitution—and giving them a place to stay and a helping hand to eventually gain independence. The Salvation Army doesn’t just do its work in the US.

An alternative is donating items to one of their thrift shops. There is a distribution center I pass quite often and recently I got into that mode of "getting rid of stuff" and other family members got into the act. I've been dropping off boxes of clothes, books and the like that they can sell to raise some funds.

Those organizing boycotts of the Salvation Army are nothing more than a whiny group of spoiled narcissists. All they see is an organization that has the audacity to disagree with them, and for that they want it eradicated despite the good it does, the lives its saves and brightens or the charity it inspires. Truly evil people.

If the liberals want to boycott the Salvation Army, just remind them that if they do, they deprive someone or children of food and shelter or basic needs..
Need to remind them( LIBERALS/PRO-GAY-AGENDA Activists ) who want to boycott the Salvation Army, that they are taking away funds to help those in need in storms, hurricanes ( does Katrina comes to mind ? ) earthquakes, so ? their boycott is another form of a HATE CRIME !!!!!!

GOD BLESS THE SALVATION ARMY !!!!

Thank you for the motivation, perverts.

I now plan to double my not-so-modest yearly Christmas contribution to the Salvation Army.

Please don’t take this as a personal attack.

Do you really need a reminder to donate to the one and only Charity you support?

Did I read that wrong or did it just come out poorly worded?

“What is The Salvation Army?

The Salvation Army is an integral part of the Christian Church, although distinctive in government and practice. The Army’s doctrine follows the mainstream of Christian belief and its articles of faith emphasise God’s saving purposes. Its objects are ‘the advancement of the Christian religion… of education, the relief of poverty, and other charitable objects beneficial to society or the community of mankind as a whole.’*”

“The movement, founded in 1865 by William Booth, has spread from London, England, to many parts of the world.”

I guess this was my way to say that I appreciate the Salvation Army and I must make sure to donate this year. Also I hoped that others might contribute as well if I mentioned it. That’s pretty easy to understand and whether I need a reminder or not is none of your business. The statement stands just as it is.

I can’t imagine why you would you would even care how I remember how to give to charities.

Don’t bother to reply to me...

According to my mother-in-law when her Dad served in WWI the Red Cross charged the soldiers for coffee and donuts. The Salvation army gave them away for free. So she only donates to the Army.

My mother said the same thing... my grandfather always got free coffee and donuts from the Salvation Army during the time he served in WWI.

I did not understand your comment and was trying to better understand your message.

I am sorry I gave offense and I tried to be clear it wasn’t my intent.

God Bless and Merry Christmas.
