The John Birch Society Announces CPAC 2010 Cosponsorship JBS to provide leadership, educational presence at nation's top conservative gathering

APPLETON, WIS.—December 15, 2009—The John Birch Society announces it is cosponsoring the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) 2010, to be held in Washington DC, Feb. 18-20.

JBS will have a double booth with half dedicated to offering educational and promotional materials and the other half housing a TV studio that will stream live video from the booth and broadcast onto JBS LibertyNewsNetwork.tv, a website that will feature archived JBS video and live video streams.

Last year, more than 8,000 attendees were drawn to CPAC. Posted on CPAC's website, The Washington Post called it, “… the preeminent yearly gathering of conservative activists.”

The bircher boys are a bunch of racist, antisemites who see a conspiracy behind everything. They are a backwards people from a bygone era. No self respecting conservative would associate with them.

Noticeably in the last year the Birchers and Paulists have been filling the vacuum left by the purged people who did so much to build FR and made it better then just some proudly “fringe” website. I think it will get worse.

JBS members are dangerous and naive believers in the most fringe political beliefs. Whether its attacking Lincoln, Eisenhower, Buckley, Goldwater and Reagan, or promoting minanarchy, anarchy, libertarianism, paleolibertarianism, southern confederate rebel secessionist mindset pushing a 150 year old Dixiecrat-Slavocrat agenda, anti war, anti Semitic, its all, hardcore wacko extremism.

JBS = conspiracy paranoiacs.

The John Birch Spciety has an undeserved bad name, just like Senator Joseph McCarthy, and for the same reasons: KGB propaganda.

The Birchers were a thorn in the side of the Bush family and their NWO mentality. Rightly so, I'm afraid.

The real, and only, problem with the John Birch Society is that they were successfully demonized by the left. So much so that even staunch conservatives have a definite knee jerk reaction to the name. In my experience, few people, left or right, know anything more about the JBS than that they have heard, somewhere, that they are bad.

JBS needs to re-brand and market themselves as what they are - not what the left wants to portray them as.

I disagree with JBS, but they are not antisemites. They expelled those people, who became the Liberty Lobby.

That’s great, and many of the principles espoused are admirable in the abstract.

Unfortunately, individual birchers have on every occasion I have ever interacted with them qua birchers acted in such a way that I am extremely uncomfortable in associating with this group.

Perhaps my experience is anomalous, and I only happened to interact with the 20 or so nutcases that JBS has permitted to enter its membership. Perhaps there are literally thousands of virtuous, upstanding, birchers who would not, for example, attempt to buttonhole my 8-month pregnant wife at a gun show to upbraid her for planning to vaccinate our child.

Perhaps there are thousands more who rationally believe that the designation of Mammoth Cave, KY as a UN heritage site really doesn’t mean that gajillions of bluecoats are waiting in black helicopters in a large cavern just itching to invade and take over the saltpeter supplies that may still lie in parts of the cave.

Unfortunately, I have not met those birchers. I have, instead, only personally met the ones I considered to be paranoid nutjobs with only a thin veneer of civility and sanity.

And members like Tom Metzger. And occasionally, stories about mind reading aliens from outer space. Most newer members are ignorant of what they're about, until they see enough crazy speech from some of the other members. That outfit was political poison way back when, notorious at least as far back as the '60s.

You and I agree more often that not but my understanding is that Robert Welch and his wife had been Baptists late in life and converts to Catholicism at the end. I am not a Bircher, have never been a Bircher, shall never be a Bircher. I don’t think they have any business at CPAC. OTOH, I met Robert Welch at the Bircher HQ, then located at Blemont, MA, in 1972 and found him to be a very fine gentleman though probably wrong on some issues. The JBS is named for a Baptist Army Chaplain who was killed, apparently by Chicom troops in Korea and who was regarded by Mr. Welch as the first American slain in the Third World War. I tend to dhare your views on the JBS but question, with every due respect, your characterization of Robert Welch. If I am wrong, I welcome correction.

I was a John Birch member a long time ago, and found it to be clean.

Even one of the Dean's of Norte Dame was on their board of directors.
