ATHEIST author Philip Pullman yesterday spoke of his “disgust” at the triumphalism of America’s religious right following its successful campaign to sideline attempts to dramatise the last two books in the writer’s His Dark Materials trilogy.

Actor Sam Elliott, who starred in the film version of the first novel The Golden Compass, that grossed £230m, says a campaign by conservative Catholics has halted plans to complete the trilogy.

I don’t get it. They can invest their own money on it. Then again, lib MO is to use other people’s money.

Tears me up too. Must be rough being a Democrat today what with Obama, the global warming hoax and all.

Production budget: $180M
Domestic gross: $70M
Foreign gross: $372M

So it made a profit, but it’s not clear what the marketing budget and additional costs were to get that kind of foreign gross. Usually the marketing budget is half the production budget. Even so, a movie that does that poorly in the US is a risk.

I am given to understand the sequel books are terrible because the author got more and more preachy in each successive book.

Funny thing: You write a book and adapt it to a movie with the express goal of attacking the Catholic church and then express indignation that the church fights back.

You know, I think that’s hypocrisy.

This abomination grossed 230 Million pounds WORLDWIDE! It only managed 55 million pounds in North America, which is why it is not being followed up with the second installment of its blasphemy.

Praise God!

I saw the movie. Has the author considered the possibility that the movie simply sucked? I have.

If they wanted to be accurate, they would say that the film's lousy quality and terrible writing sidelined the efforts to spread more anti-Christian bigotry. You can't offend the majority of your potential audience, bore the rest of them, and expect to make money.

I figure Sam Elliott would be pretty far to the right.

I remember reading that these books were supposed to be the atheists’ answer to C.S. Lewis and his Narnia books. What a joke. BTW the link doesn’t work.

I always liked Sam Elliott a lot... But this sounds like a BS excuse to me.
IF the usual investors in films thought that making the sequels would be profitable, they would invest, and the producers find another studio if necessary.... Even if the Pope and all the Cardinals and Bishops protested. One guy leading some organization that I (a Catholic) never heard of, is hardly likely to stop a movie from being made if enough people think it will be profitable.

Tried 4 browsers and then restarted. Link works for me.

A google search on the title brings it up if nothing else does.

Well he’s on record with Charlie Rose describing Pullman as “brilliant”. As for acting, he’s perfected the grunt

There is a free market. If he had had funding, the movies would have been made. He couldn’t sell the idea to investors. Tough stuff.

If the first made £230M, I doubt there would be a dearth of funding from all the usual Lib sources, regardless of what “Conservative Catholics” had to say.

Indeed, they would probably try to use the opposition as an in-your-face selling point in their advertising.

Yeah I’m with you on that one. People tend to forget that “free speech” does not mean free as in no cost. He is entitled to his opinion. He is entitled to express his opinion. He is NOT entitled to FORCE people to buy his opinions. But that fundamental lesson seems to no longer be taught in schools today.
