O.J. Simpson is in the Hall of Fame. Mickey Mantle drank like a fish. Wilt Chamberlain bedded quite a few women in his day (if we can believe him). Geez. We need to separate what he does on the course from what he has done off of it. There is a lot of rock music that I like that is produced by absolute sleezebags. What can you do? I still am a fan of Tiger Woods’ golf game. And why the posts about his race/mixed heritage. I don’t see why any of THAT matters at all.
From forgotten to only forgettable.
During my last two years of HS, and summers during college, I considered myself a serious bowler. My friends and I would normally bowl 10-12 games a day, sometimes more.
You could work up a pretty decent sweat. Still, playing golf down in Texas or Arizona during the day is a pretty good workout, too.
I like both sports, but I really don't count golfers and bowlers as "athletes", particularly when you consider how technology has taken over both sports.
In bowling, there's a ball for every conceivable lane condition. I've seen kids go from averaging 130 to 190+ in a year, simply because of the equipment. I remember a young man on my scratch team about 15 years ago. From one week to the next, we didn't know what to expect that night. During the year he had at least one 300 series, all the way to a 750+ series...a true wild card. The rest of us were steady enough to carry him on his rockier nights, and we won the league on the final night.
I don't play much golf, but I think it's safe to say that technology has made golf an easier game to play as well.
66 hot dogs in 12 minutes, folks. Tiger couldn't do half of that. And earlier this year, Chestnut consumed 5.9 pounds of funnel cake in merely 10 minutes.
And he doesn't need a caddy to carry his hot dogs, either:

True, but you could make the same argument about baseball, based upon big, fat, superstars like Prince Fielder and David Ortiz and football, based upoon almost any offensive lineman.
I think there is legitimate debate as to whether golf should be considered a “sport” or “athletics”. It involves physical activity and skill is played competitively, so I’d class it as a sport.
Especially in Texas during the summer.
Then Joey Chestnut should receive some sort of top athelic award. Take your pick. ... He DESERVES it! (/s)

Well you have to factor in the other sports that have been tainted by steroid use.
True. Then again, I once met a sportswriter who said that she covered bird-watching. According to her, if it involves equipment, it’s considered a sport.

Early Dismissal
It is near the Christmas break of the school year. The students have turned in all their work and there is really nothing more to do. All the children are restless and the teacher decides to have an early dismissal.
Teacher: “Whoever answers the questions I ask, first and correctly can leave early today.”
Little Johnny says to himself “Good, I want to get outta here. I’m smart and will answer the question.”
Teacher: “Who said ‘Four Score and Seven Years Ago’?”
Before Johnny can open his mouth, Susie says, “Abraham Lincoln.”
Teacher: “That’s right Susie, you can go home.”
Johnny is mad that Susie answered the question first.
Teacher: “Who said ‘I Have a Dream’?”
Before Johnny can open his mouth, Mary says, “Martin Luther King.”
Teacher: “That’s right Mary, you can go.”
Johnny is even madder than before.
Teacher: “Who said ‘Ask not, what your country can do for you’?”
Before Johnny can open his mouth, Nancy says, “John F. Kennedy.”
Teacher: “That’s right Nancy , you may also leave.”
Johnny is boiling mad that he has not been able to answer to any of the questions.
When the teacher turns her back Johnny says, “I wish these b*****s would keep their mouths shut!”
The teacher turns around: “NOW WHO SAID THAT?”
Johnny: “TIGER WOODS. CAN I GO NOW?”
Obama had a lock on the award, right up until Cheetah had that fantastic finish.
One of the media’s golden boys wins again. oops!

So, I guess we have a tie between Mark Maguire and Sammy Sosa for top athletes of the 90s, and now Tiger “the Juicer” Woods as top athlete of the Aughts. Nice. If you aren’t cheating, you aren’t trying. The socialist motto.
