Moscow, Russia (CNN) -- The remains of Adolf Hitler were burned in 1970 by Soviet KGB agents and thrown into a river in Germany on direct orders from the spy agency's chief, a top Russian security official said this week.
The head archivist of Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) -- the successor to the former Soviet Union's KGB -- confirmed for the first time the chain of events that led to the disposal of Hitler's body, and who ordered the operation, in an exclusive interview with Russia's Interfax news agency.
Gen. Vasily Khristoforov told Interfax in an interview published Monday that previously secret documents show that KGB chief Yuri Andropov, with prior consent from the Soviet Communist Party leadership, ordered a top secret operation to destroy the remains of Hitler, his wife Eva Braun, Nazi Germany's propaganda chief, Joseph Goebbels; and Goebbels' entire family.
Khristoforov said according to the documents, Andropov's decision to destroy the remains of the Nazi leaders and their family members was motivated by the fears of the KGB and Soviet Communist Party leadership that Hitler's burial site could become a place of worship for supporters of fascist ideas.

What remained to be burned? I thought Hitler himself ordered his corpse to be thoroughly burned before he committed suicide.
You would think that he would have preferred to have been burned after he committed suicide.
There were skull parts, some teeth and maybe some other bone fragments. This was on the History Channel a couple of weeks ago. The guys who actually did it fessed up awhile ago. Guess this is just the top brass confirming.

Rumor is that the remains were not Hitler’s. They belonged to someone else. Hitler’s remains were burned, buried and lost.

Actually, my Masonic Lodge has Hitler’s skull. We use it to drink out of during initiations.

We probably ought to count our blessings that the Reds got him (or, at least what was left of him) in ‘45. If the U.S. had captured him in Afghanistan in ‘02...well, the chances are he’d end his days eating three squares a day, lifting weights, and watching tv in a comfy cell in Illinois.

I heard he would do just about ANYTHING for cigarettes, so it is good they got him back then.

They tested the skull bone fragments and found they were female. They also had swabs of blood they took from wood that was supposed to be from furniture in the bunker room where Hitler committed suicide. That was found to be from a male. The program said they tried to contact descendants of Eva Braun’s sister, in order to get DNA samples, but that they didn’t respond.
