University officials are considering installing shower timers that would either shut off or give students warnings about the amount of time they've spent using water. The university says it could test the timers at the Baker Hall dormitory, where several students are already taking a course on environmental sciences.
"I take like 15-minute showers, 20-minute showers," student Paul Lukens said.
"I like to just like be in there, you know, take time to think about stuff," student Denice Shokranifar said.
"Parents need not to worry, there are no shower police at the University of Colorado," CU spokesman Bronson Hilliard said.
CU officials say they will decide next month what kind of device would be equipped on the showers. One option would be to reduce water pressure after a certain time, or shut the water off completely after five or 10 minutes. Students would have to wait for a period of time before being able to turn on the shower again.
"You can time it for five, eight, or 11 minutes, with one minute to go in your time allotment you'll hear a sensor go off that tells you you've got one minute to wrap it up before the water flow is decreased," Hilliard said.

If anything, students should be ENCOURAGED to shower!
Next will be group showers to save on water.
Maybe they’re trying to discourage any extracurricular activity in the showers.
Much more effective to have it shift straight to cold.
From what I hear many college students could use a cold shower.

Do like they do in some state park showers.
25 cents in the timer gives you 7 minutes of shower time.
I learned shower and shave real quick and still have time for a rinse.
But with college students, one might need to run them through a car wash.
I was gonna say it sounds like a Navy shower. Fresh water turned on for one hour only in the evening (one of the evaporators was usually broken). You jumped in, got wet, stepped out while the next got in to get wet. While he was in getting wet, you soaped up. When he stepped out, you jumped back in to rinse off. As many people as possible did this dance for the one hour fresh water was available, otherwise you ended up with a salt water shower.

As if Colorado is running out of water. Anyway, the interesting thing about this is that, to begin with, it will only apply to students who live in the “green” dorm. That is, they have CHOSEN to revert to the living standards of an earlier time, and so, I think this is a swell I idea, and they should be allowed to experience what life was like before good hot water heaters. It will be interesting to see if this has an effect on the number of students lining up to live in a “green” dorm. Meanwhile, the enviros are not going to be satisfied until they have stripped our daily lives of every ounce of comfort and convenience, and forced our return to the standards of living that prevailed before the industrial revolution.
About 4PM we'd take our canisters over to the field shower, put it in the shower bag (I supposed it held about two and a half gallons), then turn it on, soap up, turn the water off, scrub, then turn the water back on to rinse.
You did have enough water to get clean, but not enough to luxuriate in.
The whole process took less than five minutes.
Is there a water shortage? I thought the polar ice caps were melting and we are all going to be doomed soon! So that should mean there will be a lot MORE water, doesn’t it??
You folks mentioning the military remind me of when my dad said during his Air Force years in the early 1950s on one base they lined up hundreds of guys and limited them to TWO minutes of shower time. He learned to soap up and rinse off very fast while others didn’t time themselves and ended up having to towel off the suds.
I knew an older man who had been a college student in the US in the years following the Armenian Genocide. A corrupt dean at his university decided to deny the students dinner one day a week, to show solidarity with “the starving Armenians”.
Of course the money they had paid for this dinner went right into the dean’s pocket, and to heck with the Armenians. The students did not appreciate this gesture, so this at the time young man, decided to do something about it.
Dressing as a seminary student, he paid a visit to the dean’s wife, while the dean was not at home. He then gave her an elaborate tale about “taking up a collection for the orphans”, describing the tattered rags they wore while shivering in the cold, etc., that was truly inspired.
She not only gave him some of the dean’s money, but several of his prize chickens, so that the little dears wouldn’t have to go hungry.
Needless to say, the students appreciated the chicken dinner.
The dean, of course, was livid, and roundly cursed the student, until his wife berated him for “hating orphans”, and demanded that he not do anything against “that fine young man.”
I suppose the epilogue to this moral tale is that the dean ended up wearing county pajamas for misappropriation of other funds, and the student lived to a ripe old age.
One of his great pearls of wisdom I will long remember. “Unless you want to pluck a lot of chickens, never learn how to pluck chickens.”
