A private Canadian company says it will plant 1,176 trees to offset the carbon emitted by Air Force One when it carries President Barack Obama to Copenhagen for the international climate conference.
President Obama will travel 3,979 miles to Denmark on Friday, Dec. 18, and Air Force One will emit an estimated 196 tons of carbon on that trip, said LimeGreen Earth, Inc., in a news release.
"By offsetting President Obama's carbon emission, we are setting a precedent for the global community," said the companys president, Andrew Thomas. "It is up to every individual to do their part to eliminate carbon emissions. There is no one better to lead this revolution than the President of the United States of America."
The company says it applauds the global effort in Copenhagen to prevent further climate depreciation and to take steps to remedy the existing damage. We believe that President Obama's leadership in Copenhagen will be imperative to achieving these goals, the news release said.
LimeGreen Earth -- a privately held company based in Saint John, New Brunswick -- specializes in offsetting carbon emissions. Among other things, it offers several packages to make personal Internet usage carbon neutral.
Who is John Galt?
What idiots.
LimeGreen Earth reminds me of Mel Brooks character Comicus in History of the World. After he explains to Bea Arthur what a Stand Up Philosopher does, she says “Oh, a Bullshit Artist”.
What a crock of crap. Even if they actually planted those trees, it would take them 50 years to remove 196 tons of CO2 from the air.
Only the ones who actually buy the credits. I am thinking about selling some CO2 offsets myself. Want to buy some?
With respect, the number of trees and their growth rate are not the issue.
It’s a crock because there is no scientific basis for the theory that our current warm period is caused by Anthropogenic Global Warming.
Who’s gonna buy all that CO2 coming out of Obama’s never-closed mouth?
How many trees do they have to plant to offset the carbon emitted by all those other nitwits that went to Copenhagen? Is there enough space in Canada to plant all those trees?
But only 20 years for them to be marketable timber!!!
“What a crock of crap. Even if they actually planted those trees, it would take them 50 years to remove 196 tons of CO2 from the air.”
Not only that, but just about any place in Canada where you might replant trees would have eventually regrown tree cover anyway, given time. Most of the wooded areas of eastern Canada were already logged at least once, and have regrown naturally.
1,176?
Not 1175 - or 1180?
Why not plant 1200 - just to be safe?

Guess which definition describes these folks?
Planting trees to offset fossil fuel combustion is just delaying the problem.
The fuel sequestered that carbon in the ground for a very very long time.
The trees planted to again sequester that carbon will die in not too long, only to return that “extra” carbon back to the atmosphere.
That’s a lot of trees. I bet they won’t walk out in the woods and plant them by hand. Have they calculated the carbon they will expend planting them?
