And of course, stories that Joe Klein makes up get recycled in Palestinian propaganda. Ben Smith reports:
U.S. and Israeli officials are dismissing an eyebrow-raising claim from a prominent Palestinian activist and official, Mustafa Barghouti, in today's International Herald Tribune.
"The Israeli foreign minister, Avigdor Lieberman, stands up and walks out on the U.S. envoy, George Mitchell, every time the American envoy mentions East Jerusalem," Barghouti wrote in an op-ed deploring "U.S. and European inaction" in the face of Israeli intransigence.
Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren, through a spokesman, dismissed the claim as "nonsense."
"I have never heard such a thing," added the spokesman, Jonathan Peled.
A senior U.S. official who has attended meetings with Lieberman and Mitchell called the claim "absurd" and "patently untrue."
"Never happened," said the official.
Joe Klein had initially written that "The Israelis have been difficult, as always: whenever Mitchell raises East Jerusalem in talks with the Israeli Foreign Minister, the Israeli stands up and walks out of the room."
You know, it kind of reminds me of the time Joe Klein declared, in an item titled "Hamas Wants to Talk," that "the release of the Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit is a triumph of diplomacy." That was in June. Six months later Obama has no diplomatic triumphs to show for his first year in office, and Gilad Shalit is still wasting away in a Hamas dungeon somewhere in Gaza. But Joe Klein keeps attacking the Israelis, and making things up.

This turkey and Tim McGirk must be the best of friends. Klein lies about the Israeli's and McGirk lies about our Marines. Lying must be a prerequisite for working at Time.
Why do so many lefties look like old-time Bolsheviks? Klein would fit right in next to Lenin. I think a lot of the TV lefties actually cultivate a 1920’s Bolshevik style. Maybe it’s just a pencil-necked geek girly-man thing, but all these little nudniks with the scruffy hair and wire rims look like an old Politburo group photo.
It helps them get dates with neurotic New York women. Otherwise, they couldn't get laid in a Bangkok brothel with a fistful of hundreds.
Whether true or false, I for one wouldn't blame Lieberman if he did walk out on Mitchell. It should have been obvious by now that Mitchell got the role as envoy because he is an Arab-American naturally sympathetic to the Palestinian (and, by extension, the Arab) cause in the dispute. Jerusalem is the united capital of Israel and will remain so, whether Mitchell likes it or not! The idea of redividing Jerusalem should be a non-starter in these peace talks and the current Israeli government should rightfully stick to that position and, in all likelihood, will.
American Jews, one and ALL, better wake up and smell the stench that is this Administration and this Congress relative to Israel and Jews in general. There’s a major stench coming from the Kapos within this Administration and Congress.

Hmm, I think Michael Goldfarb touched on the reasoning. Joe Klein and so many others make their living on ‘reportage’. If there are no breakthroughs, no ‘triumphs of diplomacy’ to scintillate their filings, then the reporting is boring and sales suffer.
I calculate that news will more and more resemble fiction as media bankrupts itself financially... the natural consequence of their moral and ethical bankruptcy.

Klein is way off base to compare murders by Islamic jihadists with very isolated instances of murders by devout Jews.
I think the main prerequisite is too clever writing designed to entertain and inflate the author and the self-important leftist Ivy leaguers he socializes with. I don't think truth is much of an issue for these folks.
