South Florida is America's most vulnerable community to climate change. While Miami-Dade County, a pioneer and national leader, has made strides in addressing climate-change mitigation and adaptation, we now are moving toward a more resilient and sustainable future.
Miami-Dade County is developing a community-sustainability plan called GreenPrint to achieve aggressive energy- and greenhouse-gas reduction goals. This community plan, which does not know city or county boundaries, is being developed to reaffirm and synchronize our government and community goals, initiatives and measures. It will leverage existing sustainability goals and initiatives and develop new ones where needed.
In September, I convened the Mayor's Sustainability Advisory Board, a key component of the development and implementation of GreenPrint. It represents diversity with a mix of elected officials, business and real-estate leaders, community designers, environmental and advocacy groups, academics, regional planners and the philanthropic community. The board provides expertise on the sustainability challenges that the county faces and offers strategic direction and advice for GreenPrint's development.
GreenPrint's planning process, comprising the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives' (ICLEI) five key milestones, will help us evaluate and integrate the environmental, social and economic benefits in the policy decisions we make, programs and initiatives we implement and services we deliver.
We are nearing the completion of Milestone One: Conduct a sustainability assessment. This milestone allows us to first research and assess environmental, economic and social-equity challenges within Miami-Dade and the programs in place to address these issues. The assessment will be a living/working document. There will be gaps, unanswered questions and open issues. That's why it will be available for public comment and input for a 30-day period. The community's feedback and comments are vital for the plan's development.
The county's commitment to federal, state, regional and local partnerships will go a long way toward further responding to the effects of climate change. Our collective efforts will inspire, inform and enable communities to improve their quality of life and increase economic prosperity through environmental responsibility.

Thank you for your correspondence regarding how our nation should address climate change issues. The issue of climate change and attempts to mitigate its impacts by controlling greenhouse gas emissions is highly complex. Having grown up in Florida, I have a great appreciation for our state’s natural beauty and the fragile nature of our ecosystem. I’m also aware of the impact new regulations can have on economies and families.
Our nation can be a leader on mitigating the impacts of pollution and carbon emissions by investing heavily in alternative energy and clean technologies. I support wind, solar, and nuclear power, as well as other renewable sources of energy. By making the necessary investments now, the United States can lead a clean energy revolution and demonstrate energy independence in a matter of decades.
On June 26, 2009, the U.S. House of Representatives approved the American Clean Energy and Security Act (H.R. 2454). H.R. 2454 would place an absolute cap on greenhouse gas emissions covering the energy, transportation, and commercial services industries. Over time, the emissions allowance would be reduced and covered industries would be required to buy, sell, or trade pollution credits in order to remain compliant with federal environmental policy.
Recently, the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works approved the Clean Energy Jobs and American Power Act (S. 1733) with no amendments offered. The Senate bill sets a more stringent emissions reduction target of 20 percent by 2020, compared to 17 percent in the House bill. I am reviewing the proposal passed by the Environment and Public Works Committee and the House-passed bill, but I am concerned about the difficulties it will put on working families and those on fixed incomes in Florida through increased energy prices and higher utility bills.
I am closely following the legislative proposals addressing climate change and will make the best decisions I can for the people of Florida and the United States as a whole. It is an honor and privilege to serve the people of the great State of Florida in the United States Senate. I take great pride in being a native Floridian, and I look forward to the tremendous opportunity to better the lives of all Floridians. Anything with the word sustainability in it is fascism and will involve the theft of your property.
Is it any wonder the lefties love global warming so much? They live for this kind of stuff — community efforts with a bunch of planning and experts and wonky press releases like this one. Liberals would be happy if all human activity were devoted to this kind of stuff.
Ahhh good ol S. Florida. Home of the sleaziest scumbab politicos in the country, more con artists per sq. inch than the rest of the world combined, collapsing home prices (25% of what they were 5 yrs ago), the slimest real estate agents, the vilest public school teachers and run of the mill lawyers. But they have the global warming under control. LOL
Looks like Miami-Dade is well on it’s way to becoming America’s next Detroit with leadership like this, though I realize the outcome will be close, given so many other highly-qualified competitors. At any rate, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen so much claptrap packed into one statement by an elected official published in a public newspaper.
I thought I’d pare the useless words like participles, articles and such to expose the essence of this brilliant “plan” to tackle climate change. Fortunately, there were almost no pesky verbs to pare since they weren’t used in the first place, since no actual efforts were proposed. Also, the word “energy” was used once, but only in the context of “reduction goals”. No mention of oil, gas, coal, CO2, wind power, solar power, nuclear power, etc.
Actually, I’m pretty sure what’s being proposed is an eco-socialist circle jerk, but I’ll let you decide for yourselves. So, for your reading pleasure, Mayor Carlos Alvarez’s plan stripped to its essence:
