CALLICOON, New York (AFP) After a lifetime struggling to make money from the land, New York farmer Bill Graby has discovered he's sitting on treasure -- possibly the biggest natural gas deposit in America.
"It's like winning the lottery," says the 6.6-foot (two-meter) dairy farmer from the picturesque town of Callicoon in the Catskills hills.
The deposit, called the Marcellus shale, stretches all the way from New York to Tennessee, containing 168 to 500 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, according to New York State's Department of Environmental Conservation.
That dwarfs the previous big daddy, the Barnett shale in Texas, and by industry estimates could meet all US gas needs for years.
"The size is potentially tremendous for the nation as a whole," John Felmy, chief economist for the American Petroleum Institute, told a Pennsylvania College of Technology conference last month.
Environmentalists fear intense drilling could bring ecological disaster to the same pristine Catskills that also contain New York City's entire drinking water supply...

Rest assured that the environmentalists are not going to allow this continued ascendancy of natural gas.
They will discover how terrible natural gas is and demand that it be banned like coal.
At some point, the public will need to resist these thieves.
Holey moley! Maybe I should convert my car to run on natural gas?
DRILL BABY DRILL!;)
Algore is deeply saddened.
Totally unnecessary.
Natural Gas to Gasoline
A firm claims to have a cheaper way to harness natural gas.
15 AUGUST 2008
A Texas company says that it has developed a cheaper and cleaner way to convert natural gas into gasoline and other liquid fuels, making it economical to tap natural-gas reserves that in the past have been too small or remote to develop.
The company behind the technology, Dallas-based Synfuels International, says that the process uses fewer steps and is far more efficient than more established techniques based on the Fischer-Tropsch process. This process converts natural gas into syngas, a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide; a catalyst then causes the carbon and hydrogen to reconnect in new compounds, such as alcohols and fuels. Nazi Germany used the Fischer-Tropsch process to convert coal and coal-bed methane into diesel during World War II.
I agree. I am just not sure what kind of resistance it will be, and when it will happen. I can not say what I really feel.
Oh my. The enviros are going to say we have Nazis in Texas now (besides in Vidor, I mean).
FReepmail me if you want on or off my New York ping list.
Thanks for the link.
Don’t worry - NY State will figure out a way to ruin it.
A three letter word, T A X! NY kills business with taxes the way Sarah Palin takes down moose.
................Bill Graby has discovered he’s sitting on treasure .................
Hope that he’s checked his deed and all its complications.
Here in Texas, you own the land down to say, 50 feet, so any mineral or fluid rights revert to either the original owner of record, or the state!
Sorry, but I’ve never heard that a person’s mineral rights only extend to about a depth of 50 feet. Far as I know, those rights don’t have a limitation here in Texas.
I live in the DFW area. In July 2008, I signed onto an agreement to lease my mineral rights to a firm that is drilling and gathering natural gas from the shale deposits in this area. They “leased” the mineral rights of my 1/4 acre residential property for over $5000 for three years.
About 20 miles North of my house is a private cc/golf club I’ve been a member of since the 1980s. The club has been leasing unused land to gas drillers for several years (there are several well sites) and it brings in welcome income to the club.
There are lots of issues regarding this. We have signed leases with a company and they told us that nothing will happen unless NYS agrees. IN the dire straits it is in now I am sure a “deal” will be worked out.
But neighbors are also “marking their territory” so to speak———some want to go ahead and some do not. And the good stuff underneath knows no boundaries...
It’s going to get ugly...
The very fact that you say that says the time has come.
We are being goaded to react so the nazis will have justification to act against us with force.
