ENGLEWOOD, N.J. (CBS) ― Click to enlarge1 of 1 David Muneton, an eighth grade honor student, needed reconstructive facial surgery after being savagely beaten by a gang of 11 students on Dec. 18, 2009, in Engelwood, N.J.

David Muneton, an eighth grade honor student, needed reconstructive facial surgery after being savagely beaten by a gang of 11 students on Dec. 18, 2009, in Engelwood, N.J.

Police said as many as 11 students beat up the eighth-grader leaving him severely injured, and he may even lose his sight.

CBS 2 HD spoke with some of his friends about what led to the brutal attack.

The incident near a school soccer field was so violent that 13-year-old David Muneton needed reconstructive surgery to his face to correct several broken bones.

His friends at the Janis Dismus Middle School in Englewood are stunned.

"It's so hard. … I'm his best friend," Denise Melendez said before breaking down in tears.

Police have arrested seven students from both the middle school and high school, charging them with aggravated assault. The youngest one is just 12 years old.

Investigators said the teenagers jumped Muneton on Friday as he walked home from school to get back at him for an earlier incident during which the eighth-grader accidentally hit a girl with a basketball.

The superintendent said the girl, who has also been charged, led the boys to Muneton, saying "He's the one."

"We do know that after the girl made the comment one of the people, the boys, who was with him immediately punched him," Superintendent Dr. Richard Segall said.

Students at the middle school have made a get well card for the 13-year-old -- all of them outraged over what happened.

"He really didn't deserve to get beat up like that because he really didn't do anything and it wasn't intentional that he hit her with a ball," student Michael Bailey said.

"If I was there Ii would have told someone," student Emanuel Doughtery added.

"I wrote I hope he gets better soon," said student Katherine Saldarriga.

Muneton is recovering at Englewood Hospital. His brother told CBS 2 HD his condition is improving. The assistant principal said the youngster is a model student.

"He is a wonderful young man, actually one of our students who made the honor roll this quarter," Daniella Bailey said.

As these kids try to make sense of what happened all seven students arrested have been suspended. This coming as police was looking to charge four more teenagers.

Three of the students charged remain at the juvenile detention center in Paramus, while the rest have been released to their parents -- two of them required to wear ankle bracelets.

kids being brought up on violent video games with no parental discipline and schools now required to turn a blind eye to the obvious and the illiterate......

Speaking of blindness, you really believe violent video games are to blame? Wow. I guess the boogeyman still lives.

The police in Florida don't arrest kids who beat up other kids ...

Is your honor student a punching bag for some future lowlife?

I would take your bet on race related, its almost a certainty that the crowd of thugs were of a different race than the victim. Not likely Koreans either.

When the race isn’t mentioned - it means they’re black. I’d bet on it.

Really. How could unsupervised exposure to violence during a child’s formative years possibly have any effect on their fragile little minds?

Wow. The comments on that CBS website are unreal. There's an "abuse" button next to every one, and either no one is pushing them or the CBS webmaster is letting it slide.

Unbelievable comments.

For starters, you grossly and ignorantly exaggerate both the amount and extent of violence in video games, as well as the access to thereof. In that respect, you're not really any different than those in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s who vilified comic books. They were wrong, and so are you.

Being aware of the problem doesn’t equate to ignorance.

At no point did I declare any particular amount or extent of violence that any particular video games have, so please explain how I exaggerated it.

The comments are entertaining to say the least. Here is the real story, the one the MSM won’t cover:

Black pack attacks 13 year old, breaks the bones of his face, threaten his eyesight

The crime is reported by CBS News. Notice, with the exception of the headline, the low key manner of the story. This extreme attack took place, but there is zero description of it, except that they “beat up the eighth-grader leaving him severely injured, and he may even lose his sight,” and they “jumped him.” How were several bones broken in a 13 year old boy’s face, requiring reconstructive surgery? How was a boy’s eye injured so badly he may lose his sight? Did the attackers take turns holding the victim, David Muneton, while others kept punching him? Did they knock him to the ground and proceed to kick him in the head, in the usual black manner? The reporter, a blonde named Christine Sloan, tells us nothing. While the headline calls the attack “savage,” the story treats it as an abstraction. Also notice how the strongest expression of outrage quoted in the article is, “He didn’t deserve this”—as though there was any question that he deserved it—or as though, if David Muneton had intentionally hit a black girl with a basketball then he would have deserved being beaten to within an inch of his life.

This country is so overdue for the next civil war for so many reasons that it is just beyond belief. It has to happen soon. This is going to get very bloody.

...12 year old kids are not this savage over a school yard misunderstanding.

Some of them are.

Inasmuch as you have claimed that violent video games are the reason why this incident occurred, I'm pretty sure the burden of proof is on yourself. Please list each of the supposedly violent video games the attackers played, for how long, and in what specific manner they contributed to the attack.

Race not mentioned. Therefore, I’m pretty sure it was a pack of wild blacks.

Go to the link, then read the comments

Just wow. The moderator over there must've taken the night off. I imagine by the morning, about 90% of those comments will have been removed.

On a related note, I've noticed that many news outlets disable their message boards when there is a racial element to the story. Guess they don't like people speaking their mind.

I see your reading comprehension never progressed beyond those comic books.

Try to find the post where I said what what you claim. When you find it, let me know. I’ll wait.
