Schwarzenegger To Seek Federal Help For California Budget

Facing another huge deficit, the governor wants $8 billion or threatens massive cuts in social services. He also plans to renew push for offshore oil drilling.

December 23, 2009

Reporting from Sacramento - Facing a budget deficit of more than $20 billion, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is expected to call for deep reductions in already suffering local mass transit programs, renew his push to expand oil drilling off the Santa Barbara coast and appeal to Washington for billions of dollars in federal help, according to state officials and lobbyists familiar with the plan.

If Washington does not provide roughly $8 billion in new aid for the state, the governor threatens to severely cut back -- if not eliminate -- CalWORKS, the state's main welfare program; the In-Home Health Care Services program for the disabled and elderly poor, and two tax breaks for large corporations recently approved by the Legislature, the officials said.

Schwarzenegger also will propose extending a cut in the state payroll that is scheduled to expire this summer. That cut has translated into 200,000 state workers being furloughed three days a month, the equivalent of a 14% pay cut. Lawmakers would have the option of extending the furloughs, imposing layoffs or some combination of the two.

The governor is scheduled to unveil his plan publicly early next month. Administration spokesman Matt David declined to comment on the details.

The governor and lawmakers have already had to close shortfalls this year totaling $60 billion, as tax revenues plummeted at rates not seen in California since the Great Depression. Amid the continuing budget crisis, the state ran short of cash needed to cover its bills and was forced to issue IOUs over the summer.

We saw this coming for over a year and it’s only just starting. Look for one state after another to go begging to the Feds.

Cut till you bleed. Cut all but emergency services and schools, will have BILLIONS left over. Begin deportation of ANY illegal alien apprehended. Tell state employees, “See ya in June”. Just for starters.

California should not count on a federal bailout in 2010. All the money is soaked up by Obamacare and will be a whammy to California's budget.

From the crowd:

Dr. Sam Johnson - "Listen to him men. He's just crazy enough to do it!"

It’s just beginning. Wait until most of the states have to kick in more for medicaid.

Cut to the bone, Arnold. Then cut through the bone and amputate large quantities.

One new source of revenue in the budget: Schwarzenegger will revive a plan to allow offshore oil drilling from an existing platform off the Santa Barbara coast.

This should be done as a condition for receiving one more dime of federal aid. All those social[ist] programs should also have a citizenship requirement. Cut government payrolls in all non-essential areas, not the old ploy of cutting cops, fire and prison guards to force people to vote for more taxes. Finally put the CA national guard on the border with Mexico.

When all of the above are done then Ahhhnaald can come hat in hand begging to the fed for a bailout but not before. However any "sanctuary cities" don't receive a dime since they're violating federal law.

Cut the services. “Assistance” from the Feds ALWAYS costs much more, and is far less effective, than serious belt-tightening.

California may be a lost cause in any event. The boiling rage there is directed at the wrong targets, which is the legislature so heavily dominated by the coastal money and influence. But one may be sure, that the representatives of these regions have almost certain reelection prospects.

By some estimates, illegals alone cost the state in excess of $10billion in services.

Red Arnold is counting phantom revenues towards balancing the budget? Offshore oil drilling isn't going to happen in Democrat-run California.

... and wait until California has to start paying the additional Medicare benefits promised to Senatewhore Mary Landreau for Louisiana and to Senatewhore Ben Nelson for Nebraska. Things could get dicey (if not interesting) ...

Can someone help me here? I can’t see the problem!

Refuse Ahnold federal funds — then he cuts social services in CA.

Sounds like a win-win to me.

They can start by cutting off services to illegal aliens and go from there.

How about only allowing food stamp recipients to buy staple products. Pepsi is not a need.

How about not giving social services to those that cant pass drug test unless the service is effective rehab.

Do you have cable TV or smoke cigarettes??? Please have at it but dont ask me for money until you are not spending on luxuries I do without.
