Indonesia to equip navy with Chinese-made missiles

16:40, December 22, 2009

Indonesia is going to equip its own navy's warships with missiles made in China so as to upgrade combat capabilities, Agus Suhartono, Indonesian Navy Chief of Staff Admiral said Monday.

"We will continue to procure C-802 missiles from China after we test the weapon with good results,” he said adding that the Indonesian Navy was also negotiating with China to obtain C-705 missiles that were more slender in shape.

"Both types of missile will be added to the armament of the navy’s fast patrol boats and Van Speijk warships," Agus said.

"We are still unable to make missiles domestically. But fortunately, state shipbuilding firm PT PAL already has the technology to integrate weapon systems imported from abroad with those already in place on our warships," he said.

Indonesian navy will continue making it a priority to procure weaponry systems, despite the limited military budget.

"Our main priority now is security in sea border areas and the outer islands of Indonesia," Agus said. "Crimes at Sea are not the only problems we have in the western waters. In these areas we also have border disputes with India, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia."

Somethings coming....

China is building missiles and Aircraft CArriers, Iran after nukes, NK after nukes, adn now Indonesia getting missiles.

Could be the world is seeing the weakling we have in the White House and is starting to say, "It's now or never." for taking on America.

No, wait a minute, that's what he Kenyan is saying...he'll taks us over first...without a single missile.

Time to put down the popcorn, and pick up a plow share.....

The Indonesian Navy is in very poor shape. Old and poorly maintained equipment, they would be lucky to scrape together a dozen working missiles (but they also lack sufficient training to use them to their fullest potential).

Historically, there isn’t a lot of love between China and Indonesia (for a variety of reasons) but they are after reasonably modern weapons systems and there are 3 main sources.

US/European: The most desirable in terms of capability but most undesirable in terms of cost and support (western powers have cut off support for weapons/training several times over human rights issues).

Russian: Their major arms supplier for decades (prices are OK and the Russians wouldn’t know what ‘human rights’ were if they tripped over them). The downside of the Russians is that they also wouldn’t know what ‘quality control’ and ‘ ‘after sales service’ were if they tripped over them either.

China: Prices OK and the worse a countries ‘human rights’ record is the more China loves you. Quality control and after sales service are better than the Russians (it would be difficult to be worse).
