“Paging George Orwell”

George Orwell is currently unavailable. However if you check his Wikipedia page it is clear that he is was a socialist and would be perfectly happy with democrats & etc. Carry on.

One of the great weaknesses of international security.

Get on a flight at a terrorist friendly airport, and just fly thru to the USA. Nothing is checked until customs gets them after exiting the plane.

Airport security is very good in Amsterdam.

Not so good in Lagos, Athens, most of South America and dozens of other major terminals.

al queida in Yemen gave him instructions. Could it be related to recent military push backs in Yemen?

“Obama has told White House officials that all appropriate measures be taken to increase security for air travel, a spokesman said. Nevertheless, officials said, they are not prepared to raise the terrorism alert level, currently at orange — or the second-highest of five levels — for domestic and international air travel.”

Bad decision, one level up minimum should have already been taken. CNN is reporting that other International flights have been held on the ground pending more info. Now THAT is smart. No sense letting them get 5 or 6 in the air again. So the alert is raised in application but they seem to be willing to play politics by not raising the alert. Sheesh...

Oh good grief. I was simply making a reference to "1984" wherein the government controlled media fabricated stories from the war front: e.g. "We are not at war with Eurasia."

Perhaps if you read more than Orwell's Wiki page, you would realize that.

Actually, I don’t think there is a screening system or requirement in place at international airports anywhere that will detect explosives.

So here we are 8 years after the shoe bomber and we still have done nothing to prevent the threat from an explosive. I doubt it was Al-quaeda, though, or it would have worked...

Yeah.... do you not see any similarity between that & my post about his Wikipedia page?

Oh well never mind.

“George Orwell is currently unavailable” - I thought that precluded the need for a sarc tag. Tip: you can assume people around here understand a general George Orwell/1984 reference.

You have to consider the “olly olly, oxen free” clause whenever incidents get 5 years in the past. Even worse, now this is being reported:

“ABC News reported on its web site that the man is Nigerian and claimed he was directed by Al Qaeda to explode a small device in flight over U.S. soil.

The man was apparently already on the government’s no-fly list of suspected terrorists, ABC News said a senior intelligence official told them. “

Wow. My story isn’t that bad but last month I was flying from CA back home after packing up some of our stuff for the move.

I always travel with a lot of electronics, in my backpack I had my laptop, my palm pilot, my husband’s palm pilot, 2 cell phones, ipod and digital camera.

I also had a garment bag as carry on and in the garment bag was some of my husband’s business suits (he stayed home but wanted me to bring them back). The night before, after I had all packed up, I realized I forgot to pack our wireless router so I just threw it in the garment bag since my backpack was full.

I get stopped by security. Why do I have all these electronics? why 2 palms? why 2 cell phones? Why am I carrying a wireless router? Why do I have men’s clothes (btw I am 5’ and petite, hubby is 6’ and broad shouldered, no way would his clothes fit me)? Why did I pack it in the garment bag? Where have I been? Where am I going? How tall is my husband? Why isn’t he with me?

Then they took out ALL of the electronics, scanned them twice, scanned both bags twice, wanded me (which is fun b/c I have dental implants) and finally let me go.

And this guy gets on with explosives?

That is why I don't fly any longer. They put the innocent through the third degree and give the guilty a free pass.

You all need to look around - there are several more articles about this issue.

Leave it to CNN to not give you the truth. This WAS NOT fireworks. The guy tried to blow the plane up. He had explosive powder strapped to his leg - and he tried to pour some liquid on it to cause the explosion. He only succeeding in burning himself - but there was no excuse for him even being on the plane.

.. HE WAS ALREADY ON THE “NO FLY” LIST!!

I understand that there are now a few airport with explosive detection tools besides chemical wands.

However, security at many international airports is very lax. It can make the Mexican border looks hard to get through.

Still makes me wonder.

Did AQ provide him the chemicals sometime in the past and “activate” the terrorist as a result of military pressure in Yemen?

I only fly when I ABSOLUTELY have to. This trip was to take my mom out for the winter (she’s a snowbird), so I drove her out and had to fly back since hubby couldn’t bring our SUV and come get me.

I would much rather NOT fly. TSA are a bunch of idiots

"Tip: you can assume people around here understand a general George Orwell/1984 reference."

You're right, and I apologize. FWIW, I got into an extended dust-up the other day with a FReeper who questioned my conservatism only because I am from Massachusetts. When I read your response, I fell back in that "fight" mode because I incorrectly interpreted your reference to Orwell's socialist leanings as a shot at me. I let my frustration with somebody else (which the Irish in me can't seem to let go of) cloud my understanding of your post.

I really am sorry.

Most likely this guy originated in Lagos, Kano, or Abuja flew on KLM to AMS. Then he connected to his Northwest flight to Detroit. When flying this route, all you do is go through a quick re-screening at the European airport before flying to the US.

It gets even worse. NY Rep. Peter King now offering on CNN that the terrorist WAS NOT on a no fly list, but his name comes up immediately among terrorists on search engines. So now the question is: Why wasn’t he on the “No Fly” list? How is that possible?

Obama doesn't like the color code system Bush put into place,he's very petty that way. Unlikely this is a random act.The terrorists have found another hole in security. We'll see how obama handles this failed terrorist attack on Christmas Day.
