A 23-year-old Nigerian man tried to light a powdery substance aboard a Northwest Airlines flight before landing in Detroit on Friday, a senior U.S. counterterrorism official told NBC News.
Two people noticed the attempt and a third person jumped on the man and subdued him, an airline official told NBC News.
The man is being treated at the burn unit of the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, officials said.
The man told investigators that he wanted to set off a bomb over the United States, and the incident is being handled as a possibile terrorism attack by both law enforcement and intelligence agencies, senior counterterrorism officials said.

I know. That is why I stopped flying. My wife and I flew to Washing State in 2004 I believe. We left from TIA and we both had to take off our shoes to be wanded and searched. And at the same time there were a group of individuals in Arab dress that they motioned on through.
I flew to Washington State, flew back, got off the airplane and never thought about flying again.
My motto is now: If I can’t drive, I don’t need to go.
And where is Obama....Spending our tax dollars in Hawaii.

That's a good question. It's also not clear whether this happened in the air or on the ground. Sounds like firecrackers on the ground and a powdery substance in the air. Still contradictory information around. Probably not two different incidents, but can't be sure yet.

The White House is slow to react to this story changing it from attempted terrorist attack to a firecracker incident due to it being Christmas.
No doubt that Nigerian fellow was bringing $40 million to some lucky American who helped with a “banking opportunity” I hear so much about.
Hmmmm....Since he admitted he wanted to set off a bomb, I guess they really need to be cautious about jumping to any rash conclusions...
