Suspect Was Already on the Government's No-Fly List
Federal officials and police are interviewing a Nigerian man, who allegedly tried to "explode" a powdery substance aboard a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit, injuring himself and two other passengers, law enforcement officials said.
Unconfirmed reports say a firecracker was ignited on flight bound for Detroit.
The man said he was directed by al Qaeda to explode a small device in flight, over U.S. soil, ABC News has learned. Authorities have no corroboration of that information, and the credibility of the suspect's statements are being questioned, officials said.
The man was apparently already on the government's no-fly list of suspected terrorists, according to a senior intelligence official.
"The subject is claiming to have extremist affiliation and that the device was acquired in Yemen along with instructions as to when it should be used," a federal situational awareness bulletin stated.
Northwest Airlines flight 253 landed safely in Detroit at 11:53 a.m. The man, flew from Nigeria to Amsterdam and then Detroit, was taken into custody at the Detroit airport and was interviewed by authorities there. He was then taken to an area hospital to be treated for burns.

If my shampoo bottle is too big, the TSA will read me the riot act. But explosives taped to the leg? Syringe full of chemicals? I guess you just get waved on to the plane ...
It’s a good thing we maintain those no-fly lists. They work really well, don’t they?
So I’m getting that this was clearly an attempted terrorist attack...but the government, for whatever (PC) reason is too afraid to classify it as that.
We need to wait until all the evidence is in and not make a snap judgment......
This current government would classify it is a misdemeanor.
You know it’s only a matter of time before one of those uncivilized mutants does some serious damage again.
Don’t tell me. This guy was Amish. Maybe a Mennonite or a Quaker.
—Yemen. Next pisshole on the list. They'll always be a next one.
Only if you are a mooslim on the no-fly list, you don’t get checked.
The syringe news is an update. The reporter is writing quickly, see concert for concern. Could be wrong info.
If the TSA had stopped him, the Kenyan usurper would have said something like “Let me be clear — the TSA acted stupidly.”
Excuse me .. I know this is a silly question .. but if the guy is on the “no fly list” .. THEN WHAT THE HELL HE IS DOING ON A FLIGHT.
SOMEBODY NEEDS TO GET FIRED! NOW!!!
If I was a passenger on that plane .. I WOULD BE HIRING A LAWYER AND I WOULD OWN THAT AIRLINE!!!!
This idoicy has got to stop! They’re more afraid of offending somebody than they are of protecting the other passengers.
“If my shampoo bottle is too big, the TSA will read me the riot act. But explosives taped to the leg? Syringe full of chemicals? I guess you just get waved on to the plane ...”
ONLY if you are on the no-fly list.
Remember who is in charge now — Homeland Security?

A passenger on a Northwest Airlines flight from Amsterdam, Netherlands, to Detroit, Michigan, caused a brief disturbance Friday at the end of the trip by igniting firecrackers, a Delta Air Lines spokeswoman said...
NO NEED TO WORRY! IT WAS ONLY FIRECRACKERS!
I’m not sure Holland recognizes our no fly list anyway.
And a muslim and from the ME
The Netherlands can force a US carrier to ticket a known terrorist?
This is BS. Most substances are not "explosive" unless they are ignited in some confined space. If someone saw the powder then it was not confined.
The carrier is under the authority of the nation its in.
Then maybe it shouldn’t fly to that nation anymore.
DIY terror book author gets 9yrs Updated Fri Sep 25, 2009 1:33pm AEST
A Sydney man who produced a do-it-yourself terrorism book has been sentenced to at least nine years in jail.
Last year a Supreme Court jury found 39-year-old Belal Khazaal guilty of producing a book, knowing that it was connected with assisting a terrorist attack.
The court heard that he compiled historical and religious writings about how to shoot down planes, strike motorcades and assassinate high-ranking government officials in Australia, the United States and other countries.
The book was called 'Provisions on the Laws of Jihad,' it was written in Arabic and was posted on the internet.
Khazaal's lawyer argued that he did not check all the material he compiled from other writers.
But the judge said it 'beggars belief' that a person of average intelligence would not register the nature of the material.
Today in the Supreme Court, Khazaal was sentenced to 12 years in jail with a non parole period of nine years.
After he was sentenced, his supporters shouted abuse at the Bar table in Arabic.
Outside court, they said he has been unfairly treated because he is a Muslim.
Khazaal's lawyer says there will be an appeal.
KHAZAAL WORKED FOR QANTAS FOR TEN YEARS!
As long as they don't profile anyone.....
It was not immediately clear why the passenger wanted to attack the flight that was arriving from Amsterdam.
I already thought kicking his butt was fair punishment when they thought it was just fireworks. If he really was trying to blow up the plane...hand him over to the passengers, boys.
Its a good thing we maintain those no-fly lists. They work really well, dont they?
This is evidence of how they will not be able to impose tyranny. They fail at mere peacetime competence.
This current government would classify it is a misdemeanor.
You refer to the battery and arrest of the African?
I dunno. Could be a felony hate crime.
In a way, tyranny is easier than peacetime competence. Peacetime competence requires, well, competence. Tyranny just requires brute force.

If our SEALS can be punished for giving a terrorist a fat lip, mere civilians should be subject to the death penalty for beating up a passenger playing with firecrackers./sarc
Well, this is true. So much easier to break than build, or to steal than to work.
So, when he, a suspected terrorist, says that Al Quada directed him to detonate an explosive concoction while traversing fly-over country, and the mixture DOES ignite, we should assume that he was lying about the Islamic connection? Maybe he was merely stressed out, like Nadal Malik Hasan, and had to "vent' his frustration at being surrounded by infidels.
Nothing to see here. Move along. There is only the ROP here, and their intentions are noble.

The carrier is under the authority of the nation its in.The more I think of this, the more angry I get.
Let's suppose, just for a moment, that we had an actual pro-American as President of the United States and that he issued an Executive Order through the FAA that any carrier caught knowingly bringing in no-fly passengers to the United States lose their landing rights in US International Airports for one year for the first offence, 5 years for the 2nd offence and 10 years for the 3rd offence.
Let's see what happens then.
Of course, we have a pro-Terrorist President of the United States who will never issue such an order, but I'm just saying... on a certain level the Netherlands can't dictate to us who we accept on planes bound for our airports... not if we don't let them.
This is already tyranny. Terrorists and known Jihadis are given a pass, while the patriotic soldier boarding a plane is stripped of his Leatherman's (wouldn't want to endanger any Jihadis that get the SJS urge to wreak havoc on the sheep.)..
Most substances are not "explosive" unless they are ignited in some confined space. If someone saw the powder then it was not confined. We're dealing with muzzies here, not rational human beings. Maybe some Imam TOLD him the powder would magically explode.
I believe a few planes were turned back or diverted for this sort of thing under Bush. I do agree that an ultimatum should be given to the nations that don’t recognize our no fly list.
On the other hand, the no fly list has shown itself to be pretty flawed on too many occasions.
Thanks for posting. BTTT!
My guess is that we're dealing with know-nothing reporters. Suggesting that someone trying to ignite some exposed powder was lighting an explosive is enough to call for close examination of the entire story.
You’re probably right, but it still burns me up thinking of us being dictated to by these punk-a** nations. But then I remind myself: President Barak Obama. And I realize, this is all small stuff.
Well, I’m certainly not going to argue with you that reporters, on the whole, are know-nothing.
Time to kick each and every Muslim out of this country. Religious freedom you say!!!???? Religious freedom is for peaceful assembly and people who obey the Ten Commandments, not for blood thirsty animals from the 12th century.
Stop this ROP sh*t!
If you read the article carefully, I think you will find that the words ‘powdery substance’ and ‘device’ are used.
Can you use a little imagination and combine this information to come up with ‘powdery substance contained in a device’?
You are making it sound as if the perp was trying to set off a handful of loose powder. Why?
Because that's how the article reads. No one talks about igniting gunpowder when someone fires a bullet.
However I do hear that Helen Thomas is available...
