Routine Turned to Mayhem on Terror Flight
Wall Street Journal ^ | December 26, 2009 | Neal Boudette and Andy Pasztor

Posted on 12/26/2009 3:46:57 AM PST by reaganaut1

Seconds after passengers spotted flames climbing above the back of a window seat midway down the left side of Northwest Flight 253, Friday's routine descent toward Detroit's main airport turned into horror, mayhem and instant heroism.

Just as the widebody Airbus A330 made a rumbling sound as the landing gear started down, horrified travelers in seats around the young Nigerian later detained as a terrorism suspect started screaming, according to eyewitness reports by passengers. Flight attendants quickly joined the hubbub around the man in seat 19A, repeatedly screaming "What are you doing?"

There was a pop and then smoke wafted through the cabin. A passenger then climbed over several seats, lunged across the aisle and managed to subdue the suspect, the eyewitnesses said. The Nigerian man was placed in a headlock before being dragged up to the first class cabin. Passenger Zeina Seagal told CNN that after the suspect was collared and parts of his burning pants were removed, flight attendants quickly grabbed fire extinguishers and doused the fire at his seat.

"We saw the fear in the flight attendants eyes" when they ran in the aisles and "grabbed the fire extinguishers," Michelle Keepman, a passenger who had been seated near the back of the plane, recalled.

Many of those seated further back didn't initially understand the reason for all the commotion. Roey Rosenblith [...] was in seat 38J, near the rear exits, when he heard the sounds of a struggle coming from many rows ahead. "People were yelling and screaming," he recalled hours later in an interview [...].

When a flight attendant sprinted down the aisle past his seat and then ran back in the opposite direction clutching a fire extinguisher, Mr. Rosenblith realized something was seriously wrong, he recounted. "At that point everybody was terrified."

Well, he is off the mainland, and the govt. did say it was a terrorist attack, unlike Ft. Hood, where he ‘dithered.” Maybe he should play MORE golf, he does a lot less damage that way.

I would start by looking at others who had one-way tickets paid for with cash.

I would start by making it the same to buy a ticket as to rent a car, having to pay for it with a credit card.

The one-way, paid for with cash ticket would be a thing of the past.

Everyone in Israel gets the third degree. My Wife and I flew to Israel back in 2000 on their national Airline, El Al. All the passengers were separated and given individual interviews.

Needless to say, ALL our papers had to be in order. We were traveling as part of a tourist group, and even that didn't relieve us the obligation of passing through their security before boarding the plane.

If I remember correctly, all members of the tour had to be registered a few weeks ahead of the tour to give Israel time to conduct background check. A U.S.passport alone was not enough, everyone including the tour organizer who lead about ten tours yearly had to go through security.

I was amazed while traveling throughout Israel at all the armed soldiers. Even individual soldiers traveling alone were armed. I never felt threatened by the armed troops and I was very glad that they were armed. ready and able to respond if needed.

The passenger who subdued the terrorist is a hero, and I salute him.

A hero, no doubt. I only hope he got a piece of the SOB in the process.

The passengers didn’t actually get to beat on him, but he was put in a headlock...does that count?

Only if given a few nubbies (hint: ask any 5 year old).

So the terrorist is now a prisoner, in a US hosipital, getting first rate medical care. He probably already has a lawyer, which we pay for.. and has his Miranda rights, so he can’t be questioned to see if he’s part of a plot to say, maybe bring down another 6-8 planes this holiday weekend...I wonder if this will impact on the plan to bring the bad guys from Gitmo..

There was a pop

Anybody here with explosive experience? What kind of explosive device would emit a 'POP' ? and then some smoke.

Any devices that are ignited by an open flame?

These “homegrown” terrorist have several things in common. They are highly educated, have their own money resources, have communicated their radicalism on the internet, they are known as radical to their friends, and they are all muslim. Seems to me that is a profile that should be worked.
Also seems that the Muslim community could help by ID’ing those known verbal radicals. If you talk to any University Muslim moderate, he or she will be able to tell you who among the students are “radical” and fundamental. They should be thrown out of the country.

BTW - Has anybody hear from the "Flying Imams" ?

The ‘student’ was on the NO FLY LIST. Is our government weakened this quickly with Obama in office? With all the work law enforcement has put into protecting the American Citizens for over six years, in less than one year has Obama used his minions to weaken our security?

As for who the enemy is, a poll was done last year ...out of 1.6 BILLION Muslim over 25% of them are radicals...do the math and then you try to pinpoint who the enemy is and isn't.... 091101 taught me all I needed to know about Islam. If that makes me a bigot, then I am a bigot.

He wasn’t on the no-fly list. He was an a terrorism watch list. But there appears to be another Gorelick wall in place which keeps information on different types of watch lists from being shared across departments.

Making a recording seems to be a standard part of their technique nowadays.

It's strategic overkill - but it's how the little creeps think... Don't you feel there's something inherently evil about an organization with that much money that purposely uses techniques that cause their own people to die? Do they want to hear the screams? Their "man" was burned - did they want a "close up"? These are sick perverts. Something is going on that we really don't understand.

It's like the story of the street bombing where two innocent children were put in a car to be blown up - and Americans noticed it because the town got quiet while all the subhuman monsters were quiet - watching and waiting for the young children to die a horrible death.

I agree. There is something so evil at the heart of Islam that it's hard for us to comprehend it. There's no way we can understand a "religion" that boasts about its love for death and regards every human being as simply fodder for its onward devouring march.

The reports that came in today stated the Terrorist ‘was’ on Homeland Security’s “NO-FLY LIST”.

The latest I read was that he was on a “watch” list but not the “no fly” list. But then how did he obtain a multi-pass visa?

Also, the father alerted the son’s radicalism to U.S. authorities. Apparently, our system does not have a way to respond appropriately to such an alert.

This all took place because according to the Obama Administration there was any such thing as Terrorism.

The ‘man caused disaster’ on the flight is now considered Terrorism. (sarc)

Imagine if this kook had been successful, this would have opened up Pandora’s box.

As for the no fly list, I’ll take the hit and say “Watch” list. Sorry, I shouldn’t have jumped the gun, so to speak, on this one.

Be Blessed
