NW Bomb Planned by al-Qaeda in Yemen
The Blotter from Brian Ross News ABC ^ | Dec. 26, 2009 | RICHARD ESPOSITO and BRIAN ROSS

Posted on 12/26/2009 12:01:37 PM PST by gandalftb

The plot to blow up a passenger jet was launched by al-Qaeda leaders in Yemen who apparently sewed bomb materials into the suspect's underwear.

The suspect had more than 80 grams of PETN, a compound related to nitro-glycerin. Yesterday's bomb failed because the detonator may have been too small or was not in "proper contact" with the explosive material.

Abdulmutallab made contact via the internet with a radical imam in Yemen who then connected him with al-Qaeda leaders.

The suspect lived with the al-Qaeda leader in Yemen for about a month and was not allowed to leave as he was trained in what to do and how to do it.

Abdulmutallab said he was joined by a Saudi citizen whom he described as an al-Qaeda bomb maker.

The device consisted of a six-inch packet of powder and a syringe with a liquid. Both were sewn into the student's underwear so they would be near his testicles and unlikely to be detected.

Authorities say the combination of the liquid in the syringe with the powder created the flash bomb.

Abdulmutallab suffered second-degree burns in his genital area.

The suspected bomber was traveling on a visa issued by the State Department on June 16, 2008 and valid until June 12, 2010. Officials tell ABC News he was on a U.S. "terror watch list" but not on the "no fly" list, which would have prevented him from boarding the flight.

He has been on our radar for two years, mainly he was a jihadist net surfer.

Yemen is completely infested with AQ.

How do we put someone on a "terror watch list" but not on a "no fly" list????? And issue them a US visa to (obviously) come to the US??? What are we doing, welcoming anyone on a "terror watch list".

OK, I agree that keeping them out would tip them off that we are on to them. Whatever, let them know they are watched because frankly we can elint watch them easier overseas, and maybe scare them off.

Look for ball searches in an airport near you.

>Abdulmutallab suffered second-degree burns in his genital area.

The only better outcome would be third degree burns in his genital area.

OK, I agree that keeping them out would tip them off that we are on to them.

Maybe if they know we were on to them, they wouldn't be trying this crap in the first place.

I say keep them all out...just a thought.

So far, the ONLY surprising thing about this “incident” is that he was unsuccessful. Everything else is/was as predictable as the sun rising in the east.

AND additional warning from his Father, that was ignored.

"Published reports in Nigeria said Abdulmutallab's father had contacted the U.S. embassy six months ago about concerns his son had become radicalized and could pose a threat to the U.S. One report said the father could not understand why his son was allowed to board a flight to the U.S. given his warning. which would have prevented him from boarding the flight.

Not having a passport should have kept him from boarding an international flight, but it didn't.
