It is a children’s film dragged out to 162 minutes
Cinema history has been made in America. Box-office takings hit a new record of $275 million over the Christmas weekend, largely because of Avatar. Unless you have been living in a small cave, or perhaps on Pandora, the planet where the film is set, you cannot have missed the Avatar marketing campaign.
Every billboard and bus is sporting a picture of a blue fella with a yellow eye. Every newspaper has run a story on how this is the film that will finally revolutionise 3-D cinema (a full 55 years after The Creature from the Black Lagoon waved his webbed paw slightly nearer an audience’s face than previous technology allowed). And the marketing has worked — audiences have been flocking to see James Cameron’s first movie since Titanic came out in 1997.
So it’s a pity that Avatar absolutely sucks. It’s true that the 3-D stuff is awesome. For the first time, we have a 3-D film that doesn’t have a random scene with a ping-pong ball (House of Wax), a rake (Friday the 13th, Part III), or a woman having sex with a lamp (The Stewardesses), purely to show the audience how 3-D it is.
Avatar isn’t in 3-D for a gimmick, it’s in 3-D because it creates an immersive experience for the viewer. Pandora feels touchably real; it appears to stretch out around you, in minute detail, in every direction.
But that’s where the good stuff ends. Avatar is, in essence, a children’s film, dragged out over 162 minutes. The plot is risibly thin: evil earthlings (Americans, obviously. Period drama has evil Brits, present- day drama has evil Arabs, but in the future, Americans are the villains) are trying to destroy the woodland habitat of the tree-hugging Na’vi.

I agree: AVATAR had great 3 D special effects, but the plot was straight out of the Leftard Propaganda Playbook Number 101 - America and technology are EVIL; a barbaric society in tune with nature is GOOD. What absolute CRAP!
Also, there is the hypocrite thing: Comrade Cameron and Company made millions thanks to technology and capitalism.
I wish all of these ignorant Leftards who worship the primitive leave our society and live with the head hunters out in the jungle.

I've missed it and I don't live in a small cave nor do I live on Pandora, whatever that is.
I watch very little TV and thus, am exposed to little of the marketing propaganda that comes out of Hollyweird.
What present-day dramas have evil Arabs? They usually trade them in for Russian neo-Nazis or some rot.
As for Avatar? Never. I didn’t like the previews before I knew it was propaganda, and I’m not inclined to give Cameron any more money after Titanic.
Interesting. I did not get the same thing out of the movie that you did, apparently. I enjoyed it and its message of anti-narcissistic, personal responsibility.
I had never heard of the movie, until I saw some blurb on Drudge last week.

I’ve noticed over the years the more hype and publicity a movie has the worse it is.
It shows you where the public is going when a cartoon make box office records,must be Obama voters.
I am proud to say that I too have missed the Avatar propaganda. The only place I’ve even heard about the film is being discussed/critiqued on talk radio. No broadcast TV here... I block all internet ads... will go to a bar if I wish to watch a football game...
No wonder the leftist propaganda has a hard time contaminating my brain. The only place I’m in danger of hearing it is in church, and there I choose wisely.
They don't need to name the characters 'Busha' or 'Chenie'. The idea is the humans with their military might try to invade and control a 'peaceful' society that happens to sit on abundant resources.
I don’t like it when writers pull out the old insult,”you must be living in a cave if you haven’t heard of such-and-such”. Those of us who have greater intelligence and will power than such writers are quite capable of refusing to be exposed to such things without having to flee to a cave. Also, I have very rarely ever given the left-wing propaganda empire of Hollywood any of my money.
The ever weakening Dollar will continue to help many more movies break records in the future.
I saw this movie over the weekend. I drove 40 minutes to see it in a theater with good equipment and comfortable seating.
Visually the film is stunning. Worth the price of admission on technical merits alone.
Everything else is a 2D comic book. There is no depth to the characters. The plot is simple and predictable. Much like Titanic, you know how it is going to end before the opening credits. There are no plot twists or sub plots. On the drive home, I was hard pressed to remember the names of any of the characters. If only half as much attention had been paid to the story as to the effects, this movie would be a lock for “Best Picture”.
I took the grown kids Sunday evening. Expensive, being in 3D, and the popcorn and drinks added to the expense.
The movie didn’t suck - it was just the same old story in a new wrapper.
I’d give it and OK, 3 out of 5 stars.
