Chris Wallace (filling in for Bret Baier)just reported that Fox News confirms that the CIA was tracking Northwest Airlines flight 253 bommber Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab since August. He did not say more than that.
No wonder Obama spoke out again today about a systemic failure. He knew tis news was going to come out.
This terrorist getting through our defenses is going to be the responsibility of his administration, not President Bush's.
I would not defend the CIA to teach them a lesson. When Rumsfeld planned to consolidate intel gathering function to DIA in lieu of CIA, the CIA did not hesitate to leak DoD mistakes and op failures to the press to undermind Rumsfeld and military to defend their turf while our forces were in Iraq. The Dems and MSM savaged GWB with the leaks. Remember Valerie Flame and her husband who acted on behalf of the CIA by verbally reporting one thing to the CIA after his trip to Chad and writing an oped for the NY Times reporting total opposite. That oped did damage to the US credibility internationally and hurt GWB domesticly and gave ammo for the anti war left.
The CIA leaked this info to get back at Obama who planned to review CIA participation in torture and if necessary prosecute the agents for doing it. Let the CIA and Obama savage each other. If the GOP is wise, sit out of this fight and let both kill each other. They both (CIA and Obama) deserve each other.

The terrorist could have asked for that particular seat at the point of departure in Lagos, Nigeria, assuming he obtained a ticket at the counter, which I believe he did as a report was generated that the terrorist used cash. If he used a credit card or debit card, he could have ordered the ticket on-line, any number of days prior to departure, in an effort to better ensure that he got the seat of his choice. Or, he could have asked for the seat of choice, once he landed in Amsterdam. The aisle seats, bulkhead seats and seats near restrooms or the galleys tend to go first, due to the proximity to basic human needs, or for factors of comfort. A last minute cancellation may have provided a window of opportunity (no pun intended) for the seat that he eventually occupied. There is also the possibility that once the doors were closed, passengers were permitted to move to seats that appealed more to the individuals, often due to reasons of comfort or due to the desire to sit next to someone of interest, such as a family member or coworker.
Sometimes passengers reach a mutual decision to relocate their seats by switching with one another, once the seat belt sign is turned off, for various beneficial reasons, known only to the passengers, and often sanctioned by the flight attendants.
It would be interesting to know, as you posited in your post, when the seat was first obtained.

But the good news is that the MSM is dripping hints out to the masses in a painfully slow way. 9/11 did not happen to another generation. Every voting age person remembers where they were and how they felt when they got the news. Reporting on an inept administration who nearly allowed it to happen again will sell newspapers. While the things that should have been investigated in 2008 will never be reported in the MSM, all bets are off in this situation. Hecks bells...he is still sitting on the freaking beach.

Last night I heard on a middle of the night newscast that the airport at Lagos was just given the approval of our TSA one month ago. Apparently that airport was not in compliance with the TSA standards before then. Didn’t take long for the ‘isolated incident’ bomber/passenger to set his attack in motion after that lifting of it’s restricted classification, did it.
(It seems to me that an awful lot of newsworthy information that would be harmful to the “image” of this administration is broadcast once or twice in the dark of night and then buried.)

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has confirmed the compliance of the nation’s premier airport, Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMA), Lagos with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards on aviation security.
The TSA, which is a United States’ government law enforcement agency responsible for security in all modes of transportation with the bulk of its efforts in aviation security, in its latest assessment, indicated that the aviation security of MMA complied with all the 25 (ICAO) standards on which it was audited.
The audit, which began last Monday, was completed on Friday by the TSA transportation security specialists comprising Messrs Rick Little and James Cardwell. They were assisted by two officials of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). The team had, among others, looked into areas of access control, perimeter fencing, screening of passengers and cargo and on-duty card system.

The Managing Director of FAAN, Mr. Richard Aisuebeogun, who spoke in the same vein in Lagos on Sunday, said the TSA’s latest position is a reassurance that FAAN’s security personnel are well trained and could compete with their colleagues in other parts of the world. Mr. Aisuebeogun noted that the audit report further confirmed that the increased scrutiny at the MMA could check any possible infiltration of the airport by unwanted forces and guard against the potential threat of any aircraft operating to and out of the airport. “We strongly believe that this success will foster the NCAA’s oversight functions and attainment of the FAA Cat 1 for our airports in March 2010,” he added.
The FAAN boss, however, said the authority would implement the recommendations of the TSA on some areas, which it expressed minor reservation and of which the NCAA would take further oversight functions. The TSA team had also during the period assessed the operations of the American Delta Airlines, some other airline and cargo facilities in line with ICAO requirements. The TSA is a component of the United States’ Department of Homeland Security. With state, local and regional partners, the TSA oversees security for highways, railroads, buses, mass transit systems, pipelines, ports and 450 US airports.
