Racial tension has been building at Owatonna High School this week after a fight broke out Monday between white and Somali students, prompting heightened police presence, backpack searches and widespread parental worries.
Owatonna Police Chief Shaun LaDue said between six and 15 officers have been assigned this week to the school, which usually uses one liaison officer.
Principal Don Johnson said the problems began when two white students wrote papers in recent weeks that were "inflammatory and very disrespectful." One student handed out copies of his paper to friends, while the other posted his on a class blog. Both were suspended from the school of 1,600 students -- about 100 of whom are Somali.
Johnson said that before the second student returned to school Monday, the student sent text messages over the weekend to white and Somali students that were "unapologetic and in your face." He then walked into a common area Monday where more than 20 Somali students were gathered and sat down. An altercation erupted that sent one of the white students to the hospital for observation.
"When two or three [Somali] students went over there to take things into their own hands, they had a gallery," Johnson said. "It has triggered a kind of pandemonium mainly involving parents of Caucasian students, who pictured the worse -- as if 200 students were fighting on the football field."
False text messages about the school being on lockdown after someone brought a gun "created some additional strife," the principal said. "We've operated peacefully for years and then, all of a sudden, it seems like two boys couldn't quite figure it out."
One mother said Wednesday that her ninth-grader "is scared to death to go back to school tomorrow."

Wow - “Tensions mount at OHS” is, to me, the most interesting.
I love the comments at the end of the article. One person states the Somali’s have a problem with grabbing girls in the hallway which has been brought to the attention of the administration, nothing has been done about that. Another comment, one Somali came after someone’s sister with a ball bat - at least he was arrested and got sent back to Somalia.
The guy who wrote the opinion paper was suspended for writing the paper but the kids that beat him up were not!!
There are some serious issues at this school.
Three words: Generous welfare programs.

I have no idea where Owatonna is located (and neither do most other Freepers), and it is very likely that there is more than one Star Tribune in the US.
This is not directed at you specifically, but more of a general request overall; when you post something like this, please tell us where the story originates. Without that context right up front it is difficult to know if it applies to me or not.

I’m gonna have to disagree with you a bit, my FRiend.
My ex comes from that part of the world and he was Swedish. As was his entire family. They were all part of the ELCA family, so to speak. The best thing to come out of it was my ability to make pappakakor and authentic meatballs.
But I had a ringside seat for the ELCA bringing the Somali people to MN. I don’t doubt for a moment that the Catholics joined in. And the ELCA was still considered Lutheran in those days, btw. (although I agree with your characterization of them as a liberal coven). That damn magazine that ELCA had used to be delivered to our home, month by month filled with more liberal crap than I could stand.
Finally, I told my ex “Please call the church and make them cancel this rag. I can’t take it even being in this house anymore.”
And the ELCA relatives STILL think this was some sort of noble mission. My son talks to family up there (still much family there, to this day) and they continue telling him how wildly successful this has been. They even suggest that Cleveland try it. (!)
To which my son says “That’s okay, we have enough poor African Americans in Cleveland that don’t speak English.”
He might not be tactful, but the kid gets his point across.
They are involved in Jihad. Hundreds of young Somali men have left MN to go back to Somalia and train. It is fact. They have been reporting on it since last year. Finally after month later, there was a story that the FBI was getting concerned. Hello????? We are importing terror into this country!!! Palestinians are heading this way also!

Not much information there. What did the essays say? "Inflammatory and disrespectful" by what standard? Maybe something or maybe nothing.

They know quite well which faction of the Lutheran church thought this was a swell idea.
and it’s NOT the Missouri Synod, either. Any Lutheran worth their jello knows it’s the ELCA.
