The Democrats’ worst fear: Terrorism on their watch
POLITICO ^ | 1/1/10 | BEN SMITH & CAROL E. LEE

Posted on 01/01/2010 12:43:36 PM PST by ricks_place

From the time he launched his campaign for president three years ago, Barack Obama had to consider how he would react to the first serious act of terrorism during the campaign, or if he won, on his watch. His fellow Democrats had been thinking about the moment even longer - since the September day in 2001 when attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon defined George W. Bush’s presidency and gave Republicans a decisive advantage on a defining political issue.

And yet the White House’s response to last week’s attempt to blow up a Northwest Airlines flight to Detroit could rank as one of the low points of the new president’s first year. Over the course of five days, Obama’s Obama’ reaction ranged from low-keyed to reassuring to, finally, a vow to find out what went wrong. The episode was a baffling, unforced error in presidential symbolism, hardly a small part of the presidency, and the moment at which yet another of the old political maxims that Obama had sought to transcend – the Democrats’ vulnerability on national security – reasserted itself.

At this point, they're still fairly successful at blaming it on Bush, and that'll be the tactic if we get hit.

Obama already started it in his 2nd speech about the Detroit incident, when he said that 'the policies in place for the past several years had failed', and that he was gonna fix 'em.

Doesn't matter that he's been there almost a year, it's what happened BEFORE he became president that's responsible for the breakdowns.

Sooner or later, he won't be able to get away with this, but I'm afraid too many people are still to much asleep to hold his sorry, cocoa-colored butt responsible.

Obama's 3:00AM call has already come, and he didn't even have the courtesy to the American people to vote "Present".

King obuma and his fascist mob are busy looting America. They don’t care if Americans die in terrorist attacks. Just another charge to bring up in the upcoming treason trials.

Has he had brain surgery?

Did they insert a metal plate?

Scaring on his head is strange.

Obama was just being the Muslim he is! Does the left-leaning Politico actually believe Hussein would criticize his people?? Indeed not, as he and the rest of the radical left have far too much in common with the Islamic terrorists—abject hatred for the US, contempt for the American people, arrogance and breathtaking self-important attitudes and the belief that it is their birthright to RULE!!

... last week’s attempt to blow up a Northwest Airlines flight to Detroit could rank as one of the low points of the new president’s first year.

As time goes on, it will get more and more difficult to pick out one low point from all the rest.

Obama and Holder should be terrified if NYC suffers another terrorist attack during the terrorist trials. They are finished politically if that happens.

If that were true, his Homeland Security appointment wouldn’t be ever so close to finding herself on the street. I don’t think they are being successful at all in pinning this on Bush.

They are being reactive, sputtering, defensive and all around indicating by their behavior that they know they screwed up the optics of this before the People.

I’d rather they be less interested in the politics and more on the substance of targeting the would be perpetrators and finally taking this War (for it is one) seriously. Yet as Politico indicates they see it merely as a lost political opportunity which is all they regard Bush’s response to 9-11 to be. Wise strategery that netted him political capitol that helped him to a second term.

I agree in part.

At least they reported that Zero rushed his friend’s kid to the hospital in a presidential motorcade showing how seriously he took a friend’s kid’s medical condition. The kid was more important to Zero than the 200+ people on the flight. Zero is a socialist elitist and this report gives another example of it.

Zero and his White House are like Louis the XIV and his Court except for the lack of competence on the part of Zero and the White House.

However, Politico should have talked to the GOP to allow them to respond to the Cheney statement.

They don’t care that Americans will die in a terrorist act, perhaps millions, only that Democrats will look bad. That about sums it up.

The politics of “Hope and Change”. Hope the terrorists don’t attack, and the reaction will be to change your dirty underwear, if they do.

The executive branch has eliminated some of its own power by insisting that a terrorist act be treated as a criminal matter.

If Obama were truly angry, and he's obviously not, what could he do? He can't interrogate the perp, he can't vow to "do everything he can" to protect the American people, he's limited his own ability to act.

This particular episode has made it clear to the American people that Obama is too weak to be President. The moves to close Guantanamo, send Khalid Sheik Mohammad to New York for trial, and now to afford an enemy attacker all the rights of our court system, reveal themselves to have some serious political backlash, effectively neutering the executive branch in the event of a terrorist attack.

To quote a famous Chicago preacher- the chickens have "come home to roost".

Did GWB ever blame Clinton for 9/11? I didn’t hear it if he did and we all know the terrorists were taking flying lessons in the US when Clinton was POTUS.
