In bio attack, US Post Office could distribute aid

WASHINGTON — The US Post Office could play a key role in distributing medical aid in the event of a biological attack, according to an executive order released by the White House.

The order signed by President Barack Obama directs government agencies, local law enforcement and the US Post Office to work on a model for distribution of medical countermeasures in the wake of a biological attack.

"This policy would seek to: (1) mitigate illness and prevent death; (2) sustain critical infrastructure; and (3) complement and supplement State, local, territorial, and tribal government medical countermeasure distribution capacity," the order said.

"The US Postal Service has the capacity for rapid residential delivery of medical countermeasures for self administration across all communities in the United States," the order added.

The US Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano were instructed to work with the post office to develop a "dispensing model for US cities to respond to a large-scale biological attack, with anthrax as the primary threat consideration."

The order calls for the model to be drawn up within 180 days, but gives no details as to whether the idea of using the US postal system to assist Americans in the wake of a biological attack is a new one.

The United States has sought to bolster its capacity to respond to biological attacks since 2001, when anthrax-laced letters mailed to people across the United States led to five deaths.

ALL U.S. mail should be passed through neutron sterilizers to remove pathogens. This is something we should have learned from the anthrax scares a few years back.

These units routinely sterilize food; why not mail.

Currency should be similarly sterilized in central locations.

They better not attack on a Friday night. We wouldn’t get our antidotes until Monday (plus a few weeks).

... and in the event that the US Post Office is used to distribute the bio attack, then what?

Ya, right. I can’t even get my mailman to deliver a certified letter to my door. She always writes up a claim ticket and puts it into the mailbox with the rest of the mail, forcing me to go the the Post Office to pick it up.

Yep...a post office movie. Starring? Maybe Bruce Willis or David Hasselhof?

The theme would be this huge regional post office which could save 300,000 people in this area....but the incompetence bred over 100 years...has made this a questionable act. The mail carriers argue over union rules. The manager is doped up on pain-killers twenty-four hours a day. Back-office Willy (played by Ben Stiller) is their only possible hero, but he’s got girlfriend problems with a Argentine dance hostess.

So DC postal headquarters sends a special team to this regional post office...made up of crackerjack office freaks and no real management skills. All of the delivery vehicles fail (they switched to bio-diesel for some reason) and a sudden and massive delivery of Wal-Mart boxes flood the distribution center.

I’m willing to share my script with the right producer ($2,000 and a pallet of Pabst would be sufficient).

Wow. Could they even possibly come up with a stupider idea than this? And it's only the first day of 2010.

Come to think of it, if there’s an anthrax attack, I don’t want the Post Office bringing me anything. Isn’t that how it got distributed last time?

the communist idiots trying to prolong the demise of the usps is a disgrace!!! The united states postal service is about to be useless, and the communists know this and want to prolong their service for votes and control over the citizens of the United States. Time will be telling!!!!

Where do these idiots come up with all their sh*t?

This latest bright idea should work fine as long as you don't cause the union boys and girls to work too long, you don't mind driving to inconvenient locations with inadequate parking where you wait in long lines, don't mind if the "bio aid" becomes lost in transit or delivered late, and you can find letter sorters and carriers with medical training, and you can get everything done between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm.

Of course, in the good old days before ObamaCare, a sane policy would be to use the world's best distribution system to deliver the "medical countermeasures" to hospitals and doctors -- you know, the places and people where most people to to receive excellent health care services. But these are not normal times, and common sense in the Rat administration has become as rare as fiscal responsibility.

This is a joke but I'm not laughing.

Wouldn’t they just lose it?

Would the bio attack itself, and the aid to help out, cross in the mail?

Here’s your emergency med kit sir, that’ll be $75.50 postage due...
