PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. -- A former state delegate who served in Republican Gov. Robert Ehrlich's administration plans to announce Wednesday that he will challenge Gov. Martin O'Malley in the Democratic gubernatorial primary.

< break >

The former majority whip served as secretary of veterans affairs under Mr. Ehrlich. He has been a sharp critic of Mr. O'Malley's fiscal policies, disagreeing with Mr. O'Malley's decision to raise the sales tax during a 2007 special session.

George W. Owings III is his name and he doesn’t like raising taxes.

I don’t really think he has a chance. Baltimore and PG County is where the Democrats power lies, and this fellow is an outsider with regards to that.

No, his role would be merely to stir up some trouble.

It will still be fun voting against Owe malley in the primary. I register as a cross-over to do these kind of things.

How can truly conservative candidates actually win in ANY major U.S. city and break the ongoing trend of “all leftist, all of the time”?

Still hoping Ehrlich will run again. This time without a blind woman as his Lt, Governor.

George W. Owings III is his name and he doesn’t like raising taxes.

He's in the wrong party then.

Ehrlich would have an excellent shot if he runs. Larry Hogan Jr. (namesake of his father a former Congressman and Prince George's County Exec back when it was possible for a Republican to win there) and Pat McDonough a radio talk show host and State Delegate are currently running on the Republican side.

Partly by getting control of the local party apparatus. Most of those in urban areas are nothing but either just social clubs for a few remaining aging elites or liberal dilettantes (see Massachusetts) or they’re outright rumps of the Democrat party that get patronage crumbs from the Dems for agreeing not to challenge their supremacy (see Philadelphia). Bounce out the local fossilized frauds and rebuild from scratch, it’s the only way.

I don’t see what you just said in your post actually happening anywhere! Where are the conservative special interest groups that are just focusing on how to successfully get conservatism to actually exist in big cities throughout the U.S.? Even when the GOP makes any kind of political inroads in U.S. cities, they are usually RINOs and not actual conservatives!

I didn’t say it was happening, I said it’s what needs to happen. Our party generally makes the mistake of writing off urban areas and non-White areas, and when we do that, it’s no wonder urban areas don’t vote for us, nor most non-Whites (excepting some Hispanics, such as Cubans). Those Conservative “special interest groups” aren’t much better, since they think it’s a waste of $$. You need REAL pioneers that are willing to do what it takes for the long-term (because for the short run, it won’t yield many results, it will be like tilting at windmills). But as of now, the major impediment remains the local party apparatii that do not want to relinquish control. Knocking them out of the way and assembling teams of activist footsoldiers to “spread the message” is paramount.
