D.C. First to Impose Fee to Use Disposable Plastic, Paper Bags

Starting today, the District of Columbia becomes the first major city in the nation to impose a surcharge on disposable paper and plastic bags commonly used at grocery and retail stores everywhere.

Customers who tote their food or liquor purchases home in the ubiquitous bags will now be required to pay 5 cents for each one they use. The fees will go to a fund for cleaning up the city's Anacostia River.

"I signed this law in July to cut down on the disposable bags that foul our waterways," D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty said last month. "We want everyone to know that you can save the river, and 5 cents, if you bring your own reusable bag to the store instead."

Many retailers are expected to offer a credit to customers who bring their own bags. Grocer Whole Foods, for example, already gives shoppers a nickel for each bag they bring in and has discontinued use of plastic bags.

***The fees will go to a fund for cleaning up the city’s Anacostia River.***

Lets check back in 1, 3, 5 years and I will bet that if any monies went to this project to clean up River it would be less than 5%.

Another government slush fund has been created.

The Idiots that supported and passed this don't care. They just let their dog crap in my yard so I have to clean it up.

I wonder if I could just put the shopping buggy in the back of the van, and skip the bagging process all togeather. I will bring the buggy back, and most likely in better shape.

Maybe we should all stop shopping.

In the state this country is in now, this is the last thing they should be doing...charging people more to eat.

I swear I’m gonna haul a wheel-barrow to the grocery store when this his my town. I’ll haul that thing all around the store causing as much a nuisance as I can.

I will NOT pay a fee for grocery bags.

Where does it end? How long before EVERY OTHER type of store or service start charging us for the bags when we purchase merchandise? Hmmmmmmm???

They ask me at checkout: “Paper or plastic?”
I always reply: “Plastic, it burns better.”
The looks I get are just amazing!
