I was thinking this was the winter of 1976-1977 here in Western PA.

Agree.

...I made my son take shoes (he wears Birkenstock knock offs year round)
in case the car broke down.

Maybe a basic primer on the outcome of severe frostbite is in order.
Including the part about amputation of body parts!!!

Maybe he needs to hear about some of the more precious body parts
lost by Swedish soldiers in their ill-advised campaign into Russia
a couple of centuries ago!!!
That should make him a believer in making preparations for the cold.

IIRC, in the baseball stadium where the Reds play, it was 150 on the field about 20 years ago. Sounds like a good situation for the “-ates.”

Not bad for the LAST TWO WEEKS of Fall and the FIRST TWO WEEKS of winter! Still got nearly two months and three weeks till Spring! We often get snow in April!

Settling in for a long cold one!

76 degrees, sunny, unlimited visibility, a lazy Pacific breeze, flowers blooming and fruit trees are full, in Southern California...

**..but I see lots of ignorant people with no coats or gear if their car breaks down.**

I still remember, and do my military training in Alaska for getting stranded in an auto. Two cans of Sterno, two blankets. hard candy, water bottle. And matches. I also add canned meat and crackers. and a Parka.

I hear you, but he’s at that exact age where he’s knows everything and I know nothing.

My old scoutmaster spent his service years in Alaska. He was a firm believer in using a soup can with the lid cut off full of gasoline as a fire starter.
