MADERA, Calif. For most people, describing themselves on the U.S. Census form will be as easy as checking a box: White. Black. American Indian.
But it's not so simple for indigenous immigrants the Native Americans of Mexico and Central America. They often need more than one box because their ancestry can cover multiple Census categories, and they must also overcome a significant language barrier and a mistrust of government.
The Census Bureau wants to change that in the 2010 count as it tallies immigrant indigenous groups for the first time ever, hoping to get a more complete snapshot of a growing segment of the immigrant population.
In the 2010 Census, the bureau will tabulate handwritten entries specifying that the respondent belongs to a Central American indigenous group such Maya, Nahua, Mixtec, or Purepecha. The list of different populations that end up being counted will be made public when results are released in 2011, said Michele Lowe, spokeswoman for the Census Bureau.

What, no #2 pencil?
I’ve kinda always wanted to be Samoan.
Or maybe Luthren/jewish? Maybe Romulan/Ainu?
Can I list mine as Pissedoff? Because that’s what I am.
There can be no such thing. "Indigenous" and "immigrant" are opposing terms. Look at the language of early Supreme Court decisions pertaining to citizenship, for goodness sakes. This is like saying someone is a native foreigner. The rape of the language relating to citizenship continues apace.
This is greasing the skids for amnesty ... but wait, there's more!
Once "indigenous immigrants" appear on the Constitutionally mandated Census for apportionment purposes, national borders will be further blurred. Becoming a defacto citizen of the United States will be that much closer, and not just for those on this continent who bother to crash the gate.
Bastard commie gubmint pigs!!! I am actually looking forward to a visit by a Census taker. He/She or It, will get an earful!!!
.
Interesting link, Popman.
I wonder if they’re feeling some heat about the intrusive nature of some of the questions and are afraid of getting minimal responses to some or all of them.
Note the “blah, blah....This question has been asked since 1790....”
Starve the Beast.
“Two adult citizens live at this address.”
Don't torture yourself. Walk instead.
My main reason for checking off black is to do my part in screwing the racial breakdowns when the state legislator gerryridge the districts to retain your power
Good point!
It's high time we as citizens fought back at every level to break the stranglehold the federal government has on us.
If just 10 % of a district census responses were wrong or not filled out we might be able to skew their numbers enough to make a difference
Actually, you are "A frican American", legally.
10 years ago...when i lived in Chicago, the city was giving away $1000 to one randomly selected person* in every precinct. The goal obviously was to get everyone including illegals counted.
*To qualify you had to place a butte ugly “Census - Get Counted” poster on one of your windows.
My wife put one up and I took it down. And the next day she put it back up again - over my objections.
Needless to say she won the $1000 and got her picture taken with da Mayor Daley.
Of course she never brings it up when we have a disagreement. {sarc.}
