Here's an idea. Fire the TSA and let the passengers screen and pat down each other. It'll reduce the cost of flying and increase security.
Reduce the TSA to just baggage and carry-on xray and rather than treat people like the enemy, just issue every on that wants it a taser. Airlines would be far safer.

They waited 80 minutes??? Where did the TSA Security Guards learn how to play hide and seek when they were kids?
Yep. I had a hunch it would turn out to be something like this. The run of the mill TSA agent is not empowered to think, much less act. They’d have stood around talking into their radios for half an hour, quizzing the good citizen on what he saw, trying to figure out how to cover their enormous asses on the breach, and when they finally got around to contacting someone with any authority to do anything at all, the mystery man was long gone, which is why they couldn’t find him.
The cost of this fiasco in time, money and human terms is incalculable. To top it off, there was the danger to the thousands herded into corridors, packed like sardines for hours on end to await rescreening with no egress. Sitting ducks for a real attack, or a tragic outcome like a Who concert stampede.

Please do not call them “agents”. That connotes a bit more professionalism than what I see displayed by the TSA.
They are no more “agents” than the guy standing at and opening the door of the hotel is an “agent”.
At least that guy is smiling and assisting you, whereas the TSA are grilling you, mostly for no reason other than trying to act important.
By that standard, they guy who walked through the wrong gate pulled off a pretty impressive piece of terrorism, at basically no real risk to himself.
You don't want to enshrine a system where this sort of exploit is possible, or else every group with a quibble can hold an airport hostage.
Somebody suggested having all the passengers on the flight do their own security check, including pat downs and carry-on inspections of each other. Who would care more about making sure there were threats on their flight?
Yeah, you might have a few guys who’d be more interested in patting down an attractive woman, but most passengers would be more concerned for their own safety.
It’s an intriguing idea, albeit unworkable.

That said, there ARE exceptions, and I've had the pleasure to run into a few of them. I can recall 3 instances where I observed actual thinking going on, and skilled, almost el-Al brand of profiling, chatting up the passengers and looking them in eye, paying attention. I made a point of telling them that I appreciated they were on the job. Three instances are an anomaly, to be sure, but worth noting.
I wish there was some way to let those in power who are really interested in security know the really sharp ones that actually ahve the capability to keep us safe.
So do I. Normally, in situations like that, I register a comment with their superiors, so the person can be rewarded, and the company might benefit from the validation that empowering their employees works. In the case of TSA, such a compliment would have gotten them demoted. So I didn't.

And that is the reason we needed a non-political TSA rather then what we have now. Bush should have stuck to his guns.
Haven’t we all noticed when flying that the TSA people with some exceptions look like our local dept of motor vehicle clones? They just go through the motions and every so often randomly hassle someone. And to think the DIM-oc-RATS made them Fed employees to seal the deal. Losers all.
Wait until they get unionized. “We call that in two weeks ago. We’re still waiting. NOT MY JOB!”
