As for the customer service side of air travel I think 90% of those problems would have been solved if the government had allowed more airlines to fail instead of bailing them out. The gates and planes might have been taken over by people with better business skills and better contracts with their employees.
I have never seen a store or restaurant at Phoenix Sky Harbor that wasn't immaculate. Perhaps the location of the particular airport and the quality of the management and help make a difference?
More likely is the class of employee, 3rd world immigrants seem to have different ideas of what is ‘clean’ for example. But when the management pays minimum wage, you get what you get.
When last in Canada, the airdrome heads were clean — enuf you could eat off of the floor. Truly an awesome experiance, not to be found in US public buildings....
Wifey and I used to travel a fair bit, and at the 'white zone', I'd inevitably take a deep breath and declare that we were about to be "Insitutionalized"...

The red zone has been for unloading your dignity and civil liberties.

You got it wrong!. The airlines does not make up the “No Fly List”. The government does that.
South Park pretty well covered the indignities of flying. On the "It" episode, Mr. Garrison invents 'It', a high speed wheel. It's a run-away best seller, despite the need to insert the rear probe. People say, "It beats going to the airport!"
I have been no-fly for 10 years. I was already fed up with it before 9-11. Maybe I’ll return when common sense does. I heard that the comedianne Joan Rivers was barred from boarding a Continental flight from Puerto Rico to the US — some agent didn’t like her passport. No common sense there.
Yeah, I heard about it. The idiot didn’t like it said Rosenberg, which is or was the name of her husband and aka Rivers.
