Use of word Negro on 2010 census forms raises memories of Jim Crow

The census form for 2010 features a word more often heard in 1966: Negro.

For many New York blacks, the word conjures visions of Jim Crow and segregation - even if the Census Bureau says it's included to ensure an accurate count of the nation's minority residents.

"It's a bad vibe word," said Kevin Bishop, 45, a Brooklyn salesman. "It doesn't agree with me, doesn't agree with my heart."

Pamela Reese Smith, visiting the city yesterday from Rochester, said the term was outdated.

"I don't think my ancestors would appreciate it in 2010," said Smith, 56. "I don't want my grandchildren being called Negroes."

Question No. 9 on this year's census form asks about race, with one of the answers listed as "black, African-Am. or Negro."

Census Bureau spokesman Jack Martin said the use of "Negro" was intended as a term of inclusion.

"Many older African-Americans identified themselves that way, and many still do," he said. "Those who identify themselves as Negroes need to be included."

Look where idiotic PC has brought us. Someone is going to be inevitably offended. Live with it!

well they’re not African so why do they refer to themselves as African American and besides whites too can be from Africa and African American.

It’s racist to say negro
wrong to say black as I was told but off others I was told they want to be called that and not African.

Infact ever ask a black person what part of Africa are they from when they say they’re African and many of them can’t even name 5 countries over there.

so what exactly is the right name because they all call themselves different names?

Guess the brothers can always disown the United Negro College Fund and the Negro Leagues baseball history, and for that matter the hispanics, since negro just means black in spanish.

I guess you could say it’s not the color of the skin,
but the thinness of it that is the problem.

"I don't think my ancestors would appreciate it in 2010"

. . . and after she uttered this statement the universe collapsed in on itself.

According to Barack Hussein’s COLB, the proper term for race is AFRICAN.

I graduated High School in 1975 and I remember my Sociology teacher telling us how he argued with his father over the new term Black. His father, also a teacher said Negro was scientific and Black was a passing faze. At the time my teacher was Mullatto. By the way, he was one of my most impressive teachers.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. would be ridden out of town on a rail if he were alive today because that was exactly the term he used.

Where then is "Colored"? I mean if it's good enough for the NAACP, then why not the Census?

I don't think my ancestors would appreciate it in 2010," said Smith, 56.

Is this person aware that the "N" word is used by Blacks to reference other Blacks TODAY? Yes, I'm reasonably certain they are.

I think the use of the word was a mistake, because it was sure to bring the race baiters out of the wood-work. It's still pretty much a lot to do about nothing, if people who are supposed to be offended by it's use, still "use" it to this day.
