Humane Society workers arm for self-defense
Cleveland Gun Rights Examiner ^ | 4 January, 2010 | Daniel White

Workers at the Lawrence Humane Society animal shelter in Kansas have started arming themselves under that state's concealed carry laws.

The impetus for ensuring workers are able to defend themselves were numerous violent attacks on the workers in past years. This shelter is also responsible for investigating claims of animal cruelty and workers have been attacked during or after pet confiscations resulting from the investigations.

“We’re dealing with people that might not be in the best position in their lives and we might have to take their animals, or we might have to ask them questions that would make them uncomfortable and we just want to make sure that we’re protected,” said investigator Kayse Aschenbrenner.

The director of the clinic said that incidents in the past have included threats with guns and baseball bats as subjects of the complaints attempt to defend or recover their animals. Midge Grinstead, the shelter's director, also reported being threatened at her home.

I think more businesses will see the wisdom of allowing their workers to be armed.

Perhaps Ossama Obama can push National Pet Insurance on our Congress to protect these poor, innocent, terribly misunderstood and confused former pet owners ?

Maybe, he can get pet food stamps, too? Next bird food stamps? Hell, go for the total socialism of dogs, cats, and even gold fish.

This isn’t a good thing. Regular workers shouldn’t need to be armed to do this, they have no training in acting in law enforcement style confrontations.

A better way to go would be to have several law enforcement officers become Humane Animal Law Officers and take animals away from problem owners. Not the regular shelter staff. I don’t have a problem with staff being armed while they work at the shelter, they just aren’t trained to deal with escalating conflict situations and putting them at risk of individual lawsuits is assinine.

“Pit Bull owners are often ACORN members.”

That goes without saying.

You better read it again. Some of the attacks happened after the animal was at the shelter under the control of the workers.

This article is about people who realize the police aren’t there to protect them.

Well, you better read my post again. I said I didn’t have a problem with them carrying at the shelter. I have a problem with them being involved in armed confiscation without any kind of training at all dealing with potential conflicts and escalating situations.

The potential conflicts and escalating situations are happening at the shelter while they are doing their jobs.
Do you have a problem with the workers having a CCW while they work?

Friend, I am losing patience with you people who don’t actually read a post.

In my original post I said I don’t have a problem with them carrying at work. Of course, you didn’t actually take time to read what I typed. If you did, you wouldn’t have asked.
